The slab is dead flat - I had it surveyed. The ground around it is another story. There is a 3 ft grade difference between the SW corner and the NE corner. The picture is facing east.

So I finally have the exterior enclosed and finished (except for exterior lights and eaves troughs). I'm still waiting to get power onto the site. I ordered and paid for power back in June and I still don't have it. Fortis has really dragged their heels on this one. Anyway, they assured me they would be out in the next 2 weeks or so. Then I can get the place wired and after that I'll stop until next spring.

Garage question....
Has anyone knocked down their detached garage to have it be rebuilt 2 feet wider? Was it worth it?
Our garage is a little under 21 feet wide, we park both cars in it and it is fairly organized but about 40 years old, not insulated or anything, and has some cracks around the big door where nice often come in. In an older neighbourhood in Calgary.
My wife and I have been considering having it rebuilt, but only 2 it 3 feet wider... Not sure what it would even cost to have this done. Any experiences on this front?

So does the garage have a slab on grade with thickened edges? Or does it have foundation walls? Anyway, if it is a slab on grade, it's fairly easy to add onto. If you have foundation walls, which extend up above the slab level, then it's a lot of work to cut the foundation wall so it will be below the slab level of the new extension.


Also, what is the condition of the existing slab/foundation? If you have to replace it, it will be costly - removing the existing, preparing the subgrade and new slab. My slab was easily the most expensive part of the garage and that was a new slab where I didn't have to remove or modify anything.

It's on just a slab on grade -no foundation walls. so that is a plus. it is in decent condition, one crack in it, probably not worth removing the slab and pouring new one, just pour a new one beside it.

I'm getting my shop floor done tomorrow. I will let you know how it turns out. They diamond grind and fill any cracks before applying the epoxy. Includes anti-slip grit.

Soory about the really bad picture, didn't realize it until I got in, and I'm not going back out!


Anyway, insulation and vapour barrier done, I've got the vent for the furnace installed as well. Next up, drywall! That may take me awhile but I'll probably try to have it delivered next week.

Have you considered strand board? I did that and it's way better for a garage than drywall. Easier to install and probably cheaper, too.

I did consider it, but I'm going to have to drywall the ceiling anyway, and I'll be building a french cleat rail system for storage so it should negate some of the messy drywall holes everywhere issues. I can't imagine it's cheaper though? I didn't price it out, but drywall itself is pretty cheap.

A sheet of 7/16" OSB is about the same price as a sheet of drywall, but you don't need any tape or mud like with drywall so it probably does come in a little cheaper.

Didn’t want to hijack your post but didn’t want to start a new one. Tossed up a 30x50 garage this past month. Not finished yet, but actually have a couple days where nothing can be done.

A good alternate to epoxy is Poly Vinyl garage flooring. Not only is it very durable but it is only a fraction of the price of epoxy.

perfectsurfaces.ca has a bunch of options and is where I purchased mine from.

They also offer a bunch of cool rubber flooring options for that could be used for home gyms and garage flooring.
