What a dumb play.

The Bruins are on fire right now and so is Marchand.

A five game absence for such a stupid and reckless play is a real dagger for them.

I know it's Brad Marchand, but am I the only one that sees an accidental elbow from a guy going out of his way to avoid running over the goalie?

it really isnt for a blatant shot that can end a guys career, like Marc Savard. Incidents like this need to be at least 10-20 games before these guys think twice about being boneheads.

I would hope so. He doesn't get the benefit of the doubt and even if he did, that was as blatant and suspension-worthy a play as you'll see.

5 games is significant given his importance to his team but really given how cheap and gratuitous that was, and his atrocious history he should be in Matt Cooke/Raffi Torres territory.

This is my first time seeing the play. It's dirty as sewage, and Marchand should consider himself lucky he only got 5.

Its going to cost Marchand somewhere around 400K. If thats not a deterrent niether is 800K.

If they want this out of the game, its up to the players as much as it is on the league. Go back to the table in the next CBA and address it the way they want it addressed. Problem is...they dont care.

Im a dinosaur but they should fire the instigator penalty to the sun and allow players to police this kind of thing on top of anything the league doles out. There is little fear of retaliation any more and you see it in all aspects of the game.

Not in the slightest, not for that hit. That's pretty much the definition of what they claim they want to rid the game of. But he's a scorer so *wrist slap*.

maybe if shoulder was primary point of contact but why was he lifting his elbow. That dirty as dirty gets.

That was an old school WWF off-the-top-rope style flying elbow.

Can't believe anyone would assert that was possibly accidental.

Or they could ask the refs to do the job of policing the game. It took less than a month to eradicate the slashing epidemic. This is no different. Don't hit people in the head.

Minor hockey introduced mandatory ejections over 15 years ago for checks to the head, and from what I recall, that included an automatic one-game suspension.

If you directed the refs to actually call checks to the head, and everyone knew this came with a guaranteed 1-game suspension, the majority of these hits disappear overnight.

Was watching the game and appaled by the NESN broadcasters suggesting it was a problem with his skates.

I like Marchand's hockey sense, but this stuff is outrageous. Matt Cooke material.

I think 5 games is good but if they thought it was deliberate which they obviously did, 10 games would have been better.
