Wouldn't the Flames situation after a reg win being more likely to make playoffs than the Kings if they won in reg? Or is there more to it then just the standings? Do they somehow have some other formula that figures the kings are a superior team thus more likely to make it even with the deficit?

Sportsclubstats also factors goal differential (and probably some other things) into the strength of opponent variable. Flames are +4 and the Kings are +17 (though declining rapidly).
So that boosts their status for quality of competition.
Based on this sample, I would say they are putting too much weight on it.
