2004 Flames playoff D (from what I remember, anyway)
Regher-Leopold
Warrener-?
Commodore-Montador
Evans
Gauthier - injured round 1.
Lydman - came back in the Finals
Evans.
Phaneuf wasn't available because of the old rookie contract scale, and it wasn't simply a matter of 'sign here, show up'. Though in hindsight, they probably should have done what they needed to get Dion into the lineup.
Compare to
Gio-Hamilton
Brodie-Hamonic
Stone-Kulak
Andersson-Kylington
Spoon-Bart
The 5/6 guys play 12 minutes a night in the playoffs. A pairing of Hamonic/Kulak or Hamonic/Stone, while less flashy, could be more functional in the course of a playoff series. Or series - plural. There would need to be at least four injuries to get us to Brennan Evans territory, and no team in the league is built to lose four NHL defensemen and win in the post season.
