My brother brought me a Fire 7 with Alexa tablet when he flew home for Christmas. Said his wife got a bunch on Black Friday from Target in Minneapolis for $30 a piece. Lacks storage space (8GB and up to 256 GB of expandable storage) and the display resolution is not HD but overall not a bad unit for 30 clams.

Well I caved and got a Fire HD 8. It's on sale for $79.99 from a regular price of $99.99, and it was tempting enough at the regular price. Once it arrives I'll figure out how to get the Play store on it and install the apps on it that I'm used to from my Nexus 7.

I got the Play store installed using these instructions. It’s really easy.

Yeah, it never looked too daunting when I looked into it.

Am I nuts to not already have one? Basically, all I'd be doing is watching some NHL games on it, surfing Twitter, and a bit of YouTube. My issue is I'm all Apple everything, but don't feel like coughing up $400 for an iPad.

For $80, it's gotta be worth the experiment right?

I bought some before Christmas and will say with out a doubt they are worth it. Just went on a trip and it was perfect for movies and music as well as books from Amazon. It is by no means the greatest tablet but for the price you cannot go wrong.

It can get a little sluggish at times but nothing terrible and nothing a quick reboot won't fix. There is no root or custom ROMs for it if you are into that sort of thing but all in all it works really well.

Got the tablet yesterday and got the Google Play store added by the directions above. No need to hook it up to anything other than wifi. All "normal" apps are now available to load onto it.

In general on it, it's a weird interface, since I am coming from apple ecosystem (I've also had Samsung phones). Reminds me of my "ancient" Kobo Vox tablet/reader.

Looks like a solid unit for under 100, and I originally got it for my daughter but might think about getting one for myself now.

Picked mine up today, and both initial set-up and then adding the Play store was super easy. I've got all the web and media stuff I could want on it, so I'm pleased.

I grabbed the HD 10 while in the States for the FIL. I've been testing it out to see if we like it for the kids and I have to say I'm really impressed with it. Plays the few games I play on their pretty seamlessly. Plex and Netflix work fine. Play store was easy to add. For a sub-$100 it's a no brainer.

Complaints I have is that it feels slippery. I'd almost want a case or cover or something to grip if better.

Pretty happy with it and I'll be grabbing the HD 8 when it's back on sale (hopefully soon)

With a lengthy trip/vacation coming up, I bit the bullet and got an 8 HD. I'll give it a tinker and toss in my two cents for those thinking of doing the same.

I bought one which I mounted to the wall outside my bedroom, to use a secondary panel for my home security system.

I had a friend 3D print the brackets I am using. However, I have mounted a tablet for my cousin to do something similar and we used these ones. They look nice, and work pretty well. If you want the tablet to be mounted to the wall permenantly, you need to figure out how you want to deal with the power cord.

Anyone else find the speaker on the Fire 8 HD is pitiful? I had to install an app called Speaker Boost to make it audible outside of being turned all the way up.

$70 for the 16GB version, $100 for the 32.

A heckuva deal if all you need is a device for the kids to watch downloaded content from Netflix / Shaw on vacation.

I always use a Bluetooth speaker when I'm watching anything other than YouTube clips.
