The beauty of that shot was that it wasn't even going straight down the middle of the ice. It actually took a curved path (if viewed from overhead). Darned impressive.

Spin on the puck from that distance usually makes it a requirement for a curved path.
Mike Smith plays with so much intensity that I'm afraid he'd bring that into the All Star game as well. I would've preferred he play the back to back and get a nice long weekend off to rest.

This entire last month has been one extended break after another. Smith plays tonight vs LA, doesn't play again until Sunday, where he'll play a game of shinny.
Going to the All Star game is probably easier on him than playing back to backs.

Right, but if there was a plan to play Mike Smith against both the Kings and the Oilers instead, but because he's playing in the all star game now, it's probably more likely Rittich plays now. That's more the point I'm making, I'd prefer Mike play both games and then rest rather just play tonight and then the All-Star game.

I very seriously doubt there was ever a plan to have Mike Smith play both of the next two games. Rittich needs to play, and Smith needs to have his workload managed. This is absolutely the right course of action.

All things considered, I don't see why it's such a crazy thought. Smith has played back to backs before. The team just had a nice long vacation, they play 4 games and then get another long break. We've also been soundly beaten and dominated at times by the Oilers as of late, so playing our #1 goaltender could've been in the cards.
I wonder if there is any gamesmanship here on LA's part. I guess LA wouldn't know who Quick's replacement would be but if they knew it was Smith, I wonder if they'd hold Quick out and dump the travel and events onto Smith. With LA chasing the Flames...
I agree with those saying there is little risk here with Smith playing other than additional travel as opposed to more rest.

It has only happened once, in games #5/6 of the season, and following a fairly poor relief effort by Eddie Lack who had yet to start a game. Since Rittich has been added to the NHL roster Mike Smith has not started back-to-back games.

I really do not think so. There have been much bigger, much more important games on back-to-backs in the past six weeks that Rittich has started: He played against Montreal after the Flames lost in a S/O in TML for their only three-game losing streak of the season. He played in SJ after a five-game break and on the night before the Flames second meeting of the year in Anaheim.
No. There is really no good reason to start Smith in both games. Rittich is sporting a sparkling 4-1-1 record and a 0.932 SP. He should and will start tomorrow.

The backup has a 2.03 GAA and a .932 save %. You play him on the back half of back to backs against a team that's three games under.500.
