AWD is definitely a big improvement, but every review I've seen for the new Corollas mention how underpowered they feel. For only 2K more (MSRP) the Mazda 3 Turbo gives you almost 100 more HP and a better transmission. Toyota really needs something in-between the standard Corolla and the GR

Corolla resale is typically a little better than Mazda, no? I mean, I'm sure that in the end it balances out and it isn't a huge drop in favor of the Mazda and both are solid options. I also think that the Corolla repairs and concerns might be a wee shorter list than the Mazda, even if this is basically a new platform and design.
Also, I'm a little wary of some of the reviews out there at times. When they say things are underpowered, unless you're the type of person to whip the damn things around like crazy or freak out about the fact that you get close to the red line for a few seconds while merging or passing on the highway, it's honestly not a major issue. I know someone like this with a compact SUV. I'm like, just put it on sports mode for merging onto a highway. "No, it burns more gas". So... the option is to spend thousands of dollars more so that you don't have to do this? Yup.
But either way, I think the key concept is that both are better AWD than the Subaru options which sadly seemed to go to ####.

Current Gen Mazdas are the most attractive, nicely designed lineup out there (in terms of like, actually attainable).

I didn't like the long droopy snout look of the front end of the Mazdas when I was looking. Like the hood is too long or something. Something about it looked disproportionate to my eye

They reminded me a little bit of the boot and shoe look that many Infiniti vehicles had about a decade or two ago.
In person is not as bad as the renderings though.

I like the current Mazda styles, too. Still worried about their rust, but that aside as it may or may not be a problem, they seem like a solid choice.

CX-5 is probably the least ugly Suburban Utility Vehicle ever made...except for the big fender liners

To the bolded, it's spend thousands of dollars more to use the equivalent of sport mode all the time.

I don't think most posters notice or go into the sponsored forum. I actually forgot it was there until you mentioned it, lol.

In your case, fair. But some people I know are dumb and complain that the fuel economy of the vehicle is worse, but that they don't have to rev it when merging on the highway. It literally goes to like 3-5K RPM for 10-20 seconds out of hundreds of hours of driving...

I didn't notice it the first time, but it's an amazing description. The amount of people who drive those things and have absolutely nothing to do with sports or physical activity is really damn high.

Basically, I don't like driving my car with paddles unless I have the music turned down otherwise I can't hear the RPMs. Problem is, I always have the music LoUd, hence why some shift lights would be great.

So I did solve this. I bought a Holley Sniper OBDII shift light. It's pretty slick and looks really clean installed. Obviously very easy to remove, too. I don't like junking up my car with a bunch of aftermarket BS.
