Flames 4 Kings 3 (OT)
https://www.calgarypuck.com/2017/10/...-4-kings-4-ot/
- Flames come from behind
- Brown and Giordano still hate each other
- Jagr looks good on the wall
- Tkachuk sticks it to Doughty with 2 goals
- Smith still standing tall

Great write up. Appreciate it. I think Brown was on point and it's nice to see a quality player return to form.
I think Johnny was a major factor in the game tonight.
Such a pleasure to have a #1 goaltender back in net. It's strange to see how talent can be appreciated but not truly understood until they are playing for OUR team. I remember when Arizona went deep a couple years back and Smith was just outstanding. It's so refreshing to have a goaltender that stands on his back to make things happen.
Defence needs to be tightened up. Don't see why Hamonic is on the rush with no outlet. Dangerous stuff there. We need to cut down the shots on net big time.

On the other hand we also created 37 shots, so it's not like Smith had to steal the game for us.
(Doesn't mean we shouldn't get tighter defensively of course.)

4-4 in OT? What year is this?
Also, it would've been worth mentioning that Kopitar scored the first Kings goal. It was a great shot that deserves credit.

Thanks for the write up as always. Really fun game to watch and although I missed a chunk of the game, I tried to focus on Jagr.
His skill is obviously there but thought he looked lost in his own zone a few times. Im sure that will come and maybe it was at the end of a shift.
I din't think Bartkowski looked too bad.

i'm really liking the Brodie Hamonic pairing.
A throwback but it's starting to remind me of Suter McCrimmon

I believe in the Jays.

The wins are great... but the team has to become better defensively (shot suppression). We can not continue to give up 40+ shots per game and expect to remain successful. With all due respect to Mike Smith (and he's due a lot right now) he ain't gonna rock a .950sv% all season.

It is interesting how the Flames are rolling 4 lines and 3 defense pairing at even strength:
MATTHEW TKACHUK MIKAEL BACKLUND MICHAEL FROLIK 21.5%
MICHEAL FERLAND SEAN MONAHAN JOHNNY GAUDREAU 20%
JAROMIR JAGR SAM BENNETT KRIS VERSTEEG 20%
TANNER GLASS MATT STAJAN TROY BROUWER 18%
and
TJ BRODIE TRAVIS HAMONIC 35.5%
MARK GIORDANO DOUGIE HAMILTON 28.5%
MICHAEL STONE MATT BARTKOWSKI 27.5%
The odds of getting the #3 pairing with the 4th line are not as long as stated in the write up.

Literally a >95% chance the 3rd pairing and 4th line won't be on the ice together 5v5 based on the figures you provided.

Guess I need to get with the times.
I've always envisioned that section as the throwback random thoughts stuff that I grew up with in Sunday papers. Guys like Duhatchek and Simmons, Gariouch etc would all have a topic, and then a "the rest" section that was essentially a block.

94.9 % they aren't on the ice and a 5.1 % that they will be together.....
there are about 60 Ev Strength shifts a game so the odds are that you get the pairing 3 times for a full 45 second shift each and every game.
The write up says:

Just love the Flames game five on five this season.

That very well may be related to rolling the lines.... However once you say that when it is the 3rd pairings turn then go back to Backlund's line then your roll gets messed up.
If your bottom 5 is a disaster 5 on 5 then you need to improve it or just roll 3 and spot your 4th line when the other team lets you.

No, you didn't calculate that correctly. 95.05% they aren't, 4.95% they are. Based on the numbers you provided earlier.

Though the coach certainly has control over who's on the ice, so it's not just calculating odds.

I read a lot of sports columns so I totally know where you get that from which is why it's not a huge bother to me but younger folks may find scrolling down to a big wall of text a little daunting.

Point form might make the odd and ends easier to read but white space is costly in the newspaper game! I love the throwback feeling it gives.
I only saw the first and second, but when I heard they fell down 3-2 I figured it was over, didn't seem last year they could ever mount a comeback. What a difference a quality goaltender brings.

I think a point form like Friedman's "30 Thoughts" would work great. they don't have to be numbered, just each thought separated so that it's easier to scan through. I'm only looking for the items that validate my existing beliefs anyways.
