I'm trying to figure out what the point of this thread is. You posted an article for population estimates for 2016 that is a year old...

What do they consider Calgary Metro?
Does that go all the way to Canmore or is it just Okotoks Airdire Langodon or does it add High River, black diamond, strathmore.

My observations;
-Hamilton's kind of falling behind on population growth.
-Crazy how populated Kelowna now is.
-Saskatoon has clearly overtaken Regina as the preferred city of Saskatchewan.
-Retirement destinations like the Okanagan, Victoria, even Lethbridge are going to see solid growth as the population ages.

^ The best part of that montage is how surprisingly impressive 1939 Calgary's skyline was given the population was around 85,000.

The Calgary CMA is defined as the cities of Calgary, Airdrie and Chestermere, the towns of Cochrane, Crossfield and Irricana, the village of Beiseker, Rocky View County (including Langdon) and the TsuuT'ina nation.
For some reason that makes absolutely no sense, StatsCan does not include Foothills County, Okotoks, or Strathmore, which is about 65,000 more people.

That part surprises me.
Even more baffling though, Irricana and Crossfield are in. Okotoks, out?

Part of the definition has something to do with how many people commute to the city for work or something along those lines. On that basis, I could definitely buy excluding Strathmore, as that town still largely exists to support the surrounding farm communities. But Okotoks and Foothills County definitely fit any definition that includes Airdrie and Cochrane.

Calgary would be 41 in the USA. 83 in China.

Halifax is a bit bigger than I thought, I figured around 400,000 but 425 isn't surprising.

I haven't been there in a while, but in my head it's still a little 30-40k town. 200k is pretty crazy...that's almost the same as Regina which, despite in not being big, I always picture as a city.

Surprised to see Kelowna under 200k, I had thought it was a little more than that. Also a little surprising to see Calgary with `75k more than Edmonton, I knew Calgary was more but not by that much. Toronto is #7 in North America which is pretty impressive when you see other cities it ranks above.

I know it's not going to happen anytime soon but it would be cool if the city built a new Calgary Tower that is considerably taller than the skyscrapers around it.

Census data takes quite a while to compile and collate. The census was conducted in 2016.

Interesting that the Calgary Region includes those are areas to get the additional 65000 people. And if you compare it to Edmonton Region they only gain 15,000 people. So that increases the gap between Calgary and Edmonton quite significantly if comparing Regions rather than CMAs
