Ferland - Jankowski - Smith

is a third line I'd like to see someday if everything pans out that way. The size is off the charts... Ferland and Smith want to hurt you and there would be some very good offensive instincts as well as physical and defensive play.

Not sure why everyone wants to put grinders on Jankowski's line. I'd want to be trying skilled guys like Klimchuk and Shore on his line, personally.

Yeah, give the guy something to work with.

If Jankowski is assumed to be a 3rd line C, it's a defensive role, in large part. So maybe not grinders, but guys that fit that bill.

Ferland isn't a true grinder anyway - he has some skill.

Not sure Smith is a grinder either actually.

Ferland's definitely not a grinder. He's a 2-way power forward and if he continues to develop properly he's going to be a force.

I think it has the potential be great hybrid line where they can play the grinding game or a skilled game.

Yep, exactly this. Both of those guys are physical with good hands and a knack for shooting. No idea why anyone would label them as nothing but grinders. That is potentially a 3rd line with a lot of grit and some scoring ability.

With Monahan and Bennett centring our top two lines, it's unlikely Jankowski plays with pure scoring top six wingers, but those guys are no slouches offensively.

Ferland can skate, Smith not so much. Not saying he can't improve his skating, but if he doesn't, I don't see him being more than a 4th line player on a deep team.

I really think Smith can be one of the best 4th liners in the league if he pans out right. Hits, fights, and I don't think he is a liability with the puck.

He's a BIG guy with some pretty good hands. Yes, his skating needs improvement, but when he finally makes it to the NHL, I see him being a power forward with some offensive upside. I think he'll be much better than a 4th liner.

That's one philosophy. It's certainly not the only viable one.

Some would argue you should swing for the highest upside players all the time. Some would argue you should always play it safe. Probably a mix of the two is the best strategy.

The guy who scouted Datsyuk, Zetterberg, Holmstrom, Nyquist, Kronwall, Franzen:

“The odds say 1.5 in seven make it [to the NHL],” he says. “The criticism is I go too much for the home run.

...

My joke is [Ken Holland] can pick up the phone [any time] and find a fourth-line player or a seventh [defenseman]. So why not swing for the fences?”

None of those guys are first round picks other than Kronwall and he was a 29th overall pick. I agree with taking risks but personally feel that should be more for later rounds. Since the 1st round is your greatest probability of finding an NHL player I think it's important to hit on them.

Since the 1st round is your greatest probability of finding an NHL player, more often than not even a risky pick (like Joe Colborne) can still end up being a decent NHLer even if he doesn't live up to his full potential.

Don't forget, Baertschi was considered a very "safe" pick when he was taken and he was still a bust (for the Flames). That he didn't have any other high-end tool to make a case for himself ended up being his downfall rather than anything inherently wrong with his game.

Looks like Jankowski is in Calgary now. Posted a video of him on the WinSport ice on Instagram. There was talk of him being here the whole summer. Last year there was a group of Flames prospects that had ice times and trained at WinSport and it looks like they are doing it again.

Should be good both for development and for the NCAA player to feel more connected to Calgary.

Link to video of him stick handling: https://instagram.com/janko61_/

WinSport ice schedule: http://www.winsport.ca/aboutwinsport...esbookings.cfm

Looks like they have ice mid-day certain days throughout the summer.
