Quote:
Franklin, 66, came in ahead of Ray Charles at No. 2, Elvis Presley at No. 3, Sam Cooke at No. 4 and John Lennon at No. 5, according to the magazine's survey of 179 musicians, producers, Rolling Stone editors, and other music-industry insiders.

I don't agree....First off she was not a "rock" singer, can you see her belting out the Immagrant Song? "I COME FROM A LAND OF ICE AND SNOW".....no neither can I

Is she the best jazz/blues/R & B singer possible...she has legs, but what about Ella F., she could rip.

The problem is this is apples and oranges.

She's totally rock and roll.

Meanwhile in North Alabama, Aretha Franklin comes to town
To record that sweet soul music, to get that Muscle Shoals sound

Meanwhile in North Alabama, Lynyrd Skynyrd came to town
To record with Jimmy Johnson at Muscle Shoals Sound

The Mussel Shoals in Northern Alabama has always been a musical hub where rock and roll'ers and soul artists have met to produce and listen to each other's music.

Soul and blues is the inspiration for modern rock and roll. Go talk to Jimmy Page or Robert Plant and see what they tell you.

Ok, listen, i agree with you about the "roots" of Rock....Keith Richards made a good little living borrowing from blues......But is she rock, your own qoute talks about "soul" music...just because rock grew out of blues et al. does not mean that blues et al. musician are by extension rock musicians.

One guy that did bridge the "gap" gap was Ottis Redding.

Well, if you listen to Franklin, her backing is totally the same backing as Lynyrd Skynrd. Besides, once you get down to it, what is rock anyway? Isn't rock just a means of expressing yourself and throwing away stale cultural conventions in favour of reinvention? That fits Aretha Franklin pretty well.

I think a certain subsection of music is all rock and roll music. But really, at the rate that everything just influences one another, I see that the rock ethos is more about individuality and invention. So, I suppose from a certain perspective, all music could potentially be rock, it's just good that we invented the electric guitar.

Anything that is conducted by Rolling Stone is complete BS. They are the worst music publication EVER.

They've always made the controversial picks for the sake of being controversial. And yet sold out so quickly in the mid to late 90s. I effing hate Rolling Stone. Any magazine that gave Zeppelin I a bad review deserves to wiped off the face of the earth.

Hahaha, I don't know. But it seems that there are huge comparisons and similarities in style and lyrics by such a huge diversity of artists, it really makes me think that all genre lines are really false.

Aretha could and still can belt out rock and roll but she is firstly, the queen of soul. Those were her roots as evidenced in this video.

Here are the queens of soul, Aretha Franklin, Sarah Vaughn, Roberta Flack and Peggy Lee. Add in Ella Fitzgerald, maybe Pearl Bailey and you have talent without end.
