We often go to Nick's. They still do great steaks and my kid loves it. Some of the waiters have been there since I was a kid.

From what I hear La Chaumiere is still excellent. Opened in 1978, and my father says it was basically that or Owls Nest for a super fancy dinner in Calgary.

Got married there 10 years ago and the owners are top shelf. At a time when most places where gauging everyone, these guys kept it honest. Saved a ton and had a 5 star meal and reception.

We’re going back this year, should probably go more often. Just an awesome place for food.

There's something about Spiros on 17th Avenue S.W. The staff has remained the same since I was a kid. The atmosphere is warm and friendly. It's a true family run business. The food is fantastic, especially the Keftedes -- so authentic!

Oh, I’ve had a great meal there before!

That makes me really happy to hear. I’m glad you had a good night. Good place for an evening stroll afterward too.

I like Smugglers for lunch, especially if it's business, but have not had a good dinner there ever. Their meat/steaks is just second rate I find.
Caesar's (south) still has the same chef/grill-man from the early 80's - I am now at the point that I will not even bother with steak anywhere else.
La Chaumiere is really good too if you want to go old school. Nick's was a favourite back in the university days, but have not been there is probably 10 years - loved their pizza. Just too far to go to bother.
I am curious to see how the food scene will play out. Back when money was gushing out of the ground here, it seems a lot of restaurants just sprang up to relieve the wealthy rubes of their cash - pretentious and mediocre. Hopefully, as seems to be the case, it's turning more toward quality and away from "show"...

If you're going to compare Smugglers to Caesars and La Chaumiere then yeah, it's obviously not on the same level of quality. But my parents are frugal so $30 for a hunk of meat with sides, soup, and a salad bar is right in their wheelhouse.

I miss the old Hy's for steak. It doesn't hurt that I knew the chef (he's back at the new location) and often got my meal comped.

Yep. Have that every time now, with a tableside Caesar salad and a bottle of Hess cab.

Anyone have a good suggestion of a Place downtown I can go pull up at the bar and buy myself a nice dinner? Wife is out of town for a while and feel like treating myself.

I know Buchanan's has a nice bar but I don't recall if they have any stools or chairs at the bar.

I would say Bar Von Der Fels but they are closed for a few weeks. Deane House is great and has bar seating. Bridgette bar is also good.

Really depends what you are feeling. Lots of places have bar seating!

Yep. That's my go to place for steaks. We do go to Nicks at least once every three months though as it's closer and my boys love their pizza.
