Their Mayor sat down with the Economist to puff his city because of this survey?

Ok, I'm sorry, that's just sad. It's just a list, it doesn't really mean anything and it's certainly no reason to belittle yourself by begging for recognition. Really though, if I had a choice of anywhere to live in the world, I'm not sure Calgary makes the top 10, even with family and friend connections.

For next year they should throw Edmonton onto the list and put them in between Karachi and Lagos for 139th place....

And then they win the draft lottery but contend they have no luck at all.

I feel Avenue could pick this up and start rating cities like they rate neighbourhoods.

right on man, you're on a roll tonight. Between the weather thread and this one, got anymore Canadian locations to insult?

Should the whole world move to Manhattan?

This one by Economist is the best known by far. It shows up in thousands of news stories around the world. Regardless of what one thinks of the methodology, there's zero doubt showing up very high is extremely good for our reputation. How that translates over time into our well-being, who knows, but I think it can only be to the good.

Man every thread around here, even with positive news has the usual suspects acting too cool. It’s pathetic.

Accept that many of us here love this city and are proud to call it home. Heck I took a guy who lives in Miami and owns a yacht and a Farrari around town with his Brazilian girlfriend and they couldn’t stop raving about the place. How wonderful it would be to raise kids here.

He’s not alone I work with Americans from places like Atlanta that would move here in a heart beat if work allowed.

We all have our own version of paradise. As college students we all were moving to Sydney Australia. Then we grew up and had kids, those that did no one left.

Anyways, I’ll walk away but some people can really be just plain sad.

Here's some cities that are not in the list:

Edmonton
Ottawa
Dallas
San Diego
Denver
Nashville
Phoenix
Portland (OR)
Las Vegas
Salt Lake City
Philadelphia
Liverpool
Glasgow
Porto

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/travel/tr...ond-place.html

Not sure what criteria the above cities fail to meet to make the list.

I can also think of a bunch of cities in Brazil with 1 million-plus people that are not in this list.

Half of Miami is a DMZ and the schools are atrocious. Even the expensive ones.

Calgary is a city where rental cars are still obviously marked. That's like 1950's nostalgia IRL.

Granted I haven’t been to all of those places but you know what? Honestly? I can say that looking at that list, I can see why Calgary outranks them outside of maybe a couple like Denver, Nashville or San Diego. The rest are not as good as Calgary. Calgary is actually pretty sweet when you sit back and think about all the things it has to offer.

When you live in Calgary, it's pretty easy to become complacent about just how good we have it. Somethings that people would love to have we just expect on the daily. Living in another city again, you pick up on that pretty quick.

Man, I would have thought San Diego would have been on that list. I'd move there in a heartbeat, such a gorgeous city.

Our average income to cost of living is likely better than most of the world. We punch well above our wait in terms of head offices given the city size. The worst commutes in the city are around an hour. 2 median income people can buy the median house (maybe its mean income). Public schools are all pretty good. Health Care is pretty good. There are lake communities for those who like lakes and even non-lake communities for those that don’t.

Then there is the mountains which is an amazing bonus on top of the employment opportunist life balance. The only drawback is winter which in my opinion isn’t bad but I can acknowledge that if you don’t like outdoor winter activities it wouldn’t be enjoyable.

Haha. Ok, so by Calgary, they actually meant Calgary and Edmonton together. Sounds completely plausible....

Meantime, Edmonton city councillor Aaron Paquette was nonplussed. He pointed to some questionable calculations as proof that all Calgarians are miserable.

"There's a statistic that 300 per cent of Calgarians wish they were Edmontonians. How does that happen?" Paquette asked.
Leave it to an Oilers fan to come up with some odd stat that doesn't make sense. Does he even know what "percent" means?

That would actually be pretty funny. Detroit wins number 1 for the third straight year followed closely by Tijuana at number 2
