Well...which is it? Is it 2 hours or is it 3?

Yeah, strange wording.

The first two episodes seem to be about 1.5 hours each from what I've read.

I'm going to set my expectations pretty low for this one. A lot of the fantasy TV that's come out recently has been "very TV". Game of Thrones is probably the gold standard for visual and story quality (outside of the rushed ending). If it doesn't live up to those standards it's probably going to disappoint.

Wheel of Time is ok. The Witcher is better this season than last.

Wait, is this the Tolkien series that was going to be set in the 2nd age and they're just calling it LotR for name recognition? Or something else?

edit: nevermind, saw the Rings of Power tweet further up.

I hope this series is good. Need some solid LoTR content to come. Prime needs a "flagship" show too. I honestly would probably do away with it, if it wasn't for Prime Delivery.

^^^^^^

Oh not a chance I'd have Prime video on it's own merit without prime delivery. I think they know that, too. It shows.

It's pretty smart of them to set it during the 2nd age. Recognizable villain and a lot less... functionally impossible to put on a screen than the first age stories.

Wheel of time looked too clean

The thing lotr and got had going for them is they world looked lived in, too much of wheel of time looked like they just got their clothes back from the dry cleaners

Amazon is spending something like 450 million on the first season alone, I assume they will get the production and costume design right

They need this to be their flagship show

Do they? They have The Boys, which presumably has some run left... and now this LOTR thing.

The Prime subscriber #s are nuts.

Could be up to 150 million subscribers in the US alone, and up to 50 million in the rest of the world.

At the average cost of $120USD per year, that is $24B per year in subscription fees.

The Rings of Power will launch to an insanely big audience. One wonders how the marketing till Sept is going to drive Prime subscriptions. $120 per year for what you get + getting Amazon Prime Video is a ridiculously good value.

Who pays $120 a year? Just re-upped for prime and it was $79.99 plus 3 months free. So a total of 15 months.

Who even pays at all? I just piggy back off of my sister’s account. In return she gets my Disney login.

The US number sounds dubious. I see it repeated elsewhere, but that's almost one of every two US citizens. I suspect what it is counting is Amazon Prime also shared within the household. In the US you can share your Prime account by linking it to a non-prime family member. So you only have 1 person paying, but I suspect they count all the linked members in their prime numbers. Otherwise it doesn't make much sense.

I buy Prime, my son pays for Disney. I also pay for Netflix but that's another story.

I would pay for a lifetime Amazon membership if they were able to put the War of Wrath on screen.

No thanks. Not a chance in hell anyone does that justice now, at any level. If it was a movie, they'd ruin it, if it was a TV show they wouldn't be able to spend enough money to do it properly. Leave it alone.

Big battles tend to be the most boring part, anyway. Battle of the Pelennor Fields? Battle of five armies? kill me now.

Helms Deep was good, but most of them go on too long, and are generic, or silly.

To be fair, they did Helms Deep well, so there was no reason to screw up the Battle of the 5 Armies. Seems like they just choose not to do it as well and it came across as extremely fake.

Proper directing & budget can make a big difference.
