Google discontinues G Suite legacy free accounts
https://support.google.com/a/answer/60217
If you've got one of those free Google Apps accounts (used to be Google Apps, then G Suite, now Workspace?) then looks like the free ride is over.
I've got two email domains that I'll have to migrate if I don't want to pay $8 a month per user. I don't use any of the office or collaboration features, just use it to host a domain email address.
Not sure what the best alternatives are. I stopped using my web host long ago as they were not super reliable. I mean it was ok, but email is one of those things that when it doesn't work it's often pretty critical.
Any experience with a good stable email hosting provider that doesn't cost much?

Two domains, how many users? Microsoft 365 Business Basic is under $7/month CAD per user.
As far as free options, those are pretty hard to come by where they also support custom domains.

Probably 3-4 on one and 2-3 on the other, so not very much at all.
I guess I could just get a few of the non-me users to pay me lol.

Reading that lots of people have things like YouTube videos or account purchases associated with these accounts and as of yet there isn't a way to transfer them.
So I guess you have to pay up if you want to retain access to your purchases.

Youtube makes sense, but what sort of purchases are tied to the account and not the email address?

Sounds like things purchased through Google Play (apps, media), it's associated with your Google account.
I always knew they'd get rid of the people grandfathered in on the free tier but if I was on Android I probably wouldn't have thought much of it and would have gone ahead and purchased stuff.
They'll probably either make a path to transfer the stuff, if they don't there could be a lot of people taking them to court.

Forgive my ignorance here - but does this apply to us regular non corporate, personal users? Like many people I have an @gmail.com account for personal usage, and some light usage of Google Drive / Sheets etc because it was there. Do I lose access to these apps and Google Drive space?

No, this is for people who have their own domain names using Google's services. 8-9 years ago it was free to do so with up to 10 users (I think). Those people are having to pay now.
I think I have a couple clients on this but I don't remember who because it's been so long since I set it up. Could be interesting when this comes due.
I'll definitely have to ditch a few emails from our free account that are just sitting there.

Thanks for the heads up on this. I have been a long time user of the free version. I started to move away and use a generic gmail as my primary a few years back when I started using google home for controlling devices and it wasn't working very well with the free gsuite account. Going through now and changing over my email address in all my various online accounts now so I can be ready to lose easy access to the account. (It currently forwards everything to my generic gmail so I never notice the difference)

All my Android apps, Google Movies and TV and Google Books are tied to that account.

If you want a free option, check out Zoho. It's not nearly as good as Google, but might work for some folks with a limited set of needs for free.

Looks like procrastination pays off, Google's backed off. I thought there was a good chance they would so I put off any changes to my vanity domain.

In May, Google finally told these users what would happen to their accounts. The new support page says, "For individuals and families using your account for non-commercial purposes, you can continue using the G Suite legacy free edition and opt out of the transition to Google Workspace."
|
So I'll still have to transition one as it's used for business. Some will probably still move off due to Google's antics but I'm too lazy for that.
