Canadiens name Kent Hughes as general manager
https://www.tsn.ca/montreal-canadien...hise%20history.
I don't know much about him. Seems along the lines of the Mike Gillis hire years ago.

Darnell Nurse's agent (among others), so one person who negotiated that contract will be employed as an NHL GM next season.

With the way their front office is structured it makes sense.
Hughes track record speaks for itself, guy gets his players paid.

That's likely the theory. I believe that was suggested when Gillis became a GM and I don't think it actually worked out that way.
Another interesting wrinkle... He is (or was) Bergeron's agent, which could make this year's free agency period interesting. Would Bergeron do the unthinkable and jump to the Habs?

I’m not saying you’re wrong, but will Katz pay Holland $10 million to be a pro scout for the Red Wings next season and the one after?
They’ll try to save face somehow and bungle it up in usual Edmonton style.

Seems like a good set up for the Habs TBH. On paper anyway

I’ve seen two very different pictures used for him on TSN, that cannot be the same person, so it seems even the media is unsure who Kent Hughes is.

I like this a lot better than hiring of a retread or an ex-player like Daniel Briere that got fast tracked because of his name.

That TSN pic looks 20 years old.

Or Garth Snow, remember that one? Went from being a back up goalie to a GM immediately after announcing his retirement. Replaced Neil Smith only 41 days after he was hired, and was then later name president as well. Then he lasted a really long time (like 13 years) in the position despite making some really terrible moves.
He must have had something on someone.

I actually just listened to 960 and they actually discussed that Briere actually did put some time into learning the ropes in the Flyers organization so maybe I discounted his abilities somewhat. I just think it's too quick to go from player to GM in five years. Still I think the NHL could really benefit from bringing in bright minds that aren't ex-players. I think some of the ex-player biases have been part of why the NHL is kind of a dinosaur league at times.

Yeah, though Yzerman did it in 4 (he was a VP for the Wings in those 4 though). Shanahan went from player to POHO in 5 years and worked for the NHL in between.

Just realized the other picture they originally had up was of Jeff Gorton.

There is almost no chance of that happening.
