Then add 3 more years to see if you have a player from it, maybe 4. This is a ~5 year investment. That isn't planning for now, this is planning for 2030. Decent chance the front office won't even see the fruits of their labor, coaching staff will have changed, perhaps twice.

I would trade for as many firsts as far into the future as possible. Good teams could be bad in 2 - 3 years from now and vice versa. If I had two choices:
1. Taking a first rounder in 2024 that is probably going to be in the 15 - 31 range
2. Taking a first rounder in 2026 that could be anywhere from 1 - 31
I would take the Option 2 in 2026 every time.

Tampa really has no young players or prospects that move the needle. Hard to imagine a trade that will feel like a win for the Flames.

On the flip side though, because it is so far away, this could be a top 10 pick for all we know, top 5 even. Assuming of course it isn't protected.
Then thats not a 2030 player but more like 2028, possibly right away even in 2027.

I wonder how Knight is seen by Florida and the rest of the league right now.
2 more years left at $4.5M ... .898 save percentage in the AHL this season is not great.
Feels that a team that wants to win now, and is facing a bit of a cap crunch would potentially want to move that contract out, and is probably negative value at this point.
Hanifin
Dansk
for
Lundell
Knight
I'd do that in a heartbeat, and helps the Panthers open up $4.5M of cap space for two more years after this one that they desperately need.
For the Flames they take the risk on Knight...but they can feel more confident moving Markstrom, and then would have Knight/Wolf in the goalie pipeline (two guys played in two WJC championships together for the Americans).

I like Howard as a prospect a lot but hd feels like the type to pull a Fox and I can’t handle that again.

An unprotected 2026 1st from Tampa would be nice. They might not be so good in 2 years.

Yes you have to discount the value slightly as it's a future asset... however CC could always use this pick in a trade with a team who's looking further out. 1sts always have value and 2026 is only two seasons away. A high first could end up joining the team more quickly, or the pick could be packaged out next year when it's only a season out and has higher value.
two picks and a prospect is not bad value TBH.

The key is that 2026 first round, has to unprotected or if top 10 protected, then a 2027 first round pick with no lottery protection
Could be absolute homerun, I see Tampa Bay being a much crappier team in 3-4 years

I believe in the Jays.

Plus... who knows... maybe Tampa faceplants in 2026 and we get Gavin McKenna or Joe Iginla.

So will it end up being another Iginla trade?
Hanowski for Hanifin?

These rumored Tampa returns are depressing TBH.
Basically the same return that Ben Chariot got as a rental a few years ago.
A 26 year old top pairing defenseman with an 8 year extension should return a huge package.

Maybe they'd like to send Point our way. They don't need that guy anyway.

Or they can wait a few months and sign him to a better 7 year deal without giving Calgary a thing…

One thing about that 2026 draft pick...for those that are down on 2026 picks....2026 is Joe Iginla's draft year.

I really like the 2026 unprotected first if that’s part of this deal. Very attractive asset IMO. Tampa is on its way down.

Huuhtanen is intriguing, not as the main return but as a sweetener. I wonder if the Flames have scouted him.

Gauthier + Howard + 2026 1st + cap dump for extended Hanifin with 50% retained on remainder of expiring contract?
Can see the Lightning moving Cirelli, not really living up to that contract. Would be shocked if they moved Hagel. That Nick Paul extension looks rough these days given he's a -21+/-.

I’m sure Tampa with Hedman , Point , Vasileski , Hanifin, Sergachev and Kucherov will be bottom 10 in 2 years ….

Huuhtanen and Perbix would convince me Conroy is trading purposefully for interesting names
