I am having trouble understanding why the alternative to a $15/hr minimum wage is a six month unpaid internship

I bet a lot of people here were like me, on their own at 18/19 and more worried about making rent than offering to work for cheap (or free)
So the question is, why are we overpaying the overwhelming majority of teenagers for menial labour rather than using the social safety net to support the minority of teenagers in such situations?

This applies to all minimum wage earners not just youth. A differential wage incentivizes the hiring of kids who as you say the majority of which dont need the money.

I honestly don't see the problem with that. The point of jobs like that is to learn the value of earning money and how the working world works. It's the kind of role that should be incentivized to hire kids.

For able adults, we should be prioritizing ways to advance into other job areas.

I don't mean to alarm anyone, but Western Canadian Select plummeted 30% today and is now at $18 a barrel. Basically worthless.

Just pathetic.

People should be alarmed. The fact that we're forcibly subsidizing US interests should be leading the news every night until reasonable people get the message.

I thought when I saw this earlier it was a mistake or a glitch. How can it drop that much in one day?

If you have one customer for your product and they decide that's all they want to pay, what else can you do?

The mainline break in BC is forcing refineries to really scale back, or even idle, productions. No demand means that the price craters. At the same time, it will increase refined prices in BC

That was a Enbridge gas line was it not?

But $18/bbl is extremely worrysome.

Trying to find a silver lining here...

Maybe this is something that needs to happen for this country to pull it's head out of it's ass? Without oil propping up our economy, and paying for so many of the social programs that the far left enjoy so much, perhaps that'll be a light-bulb moment for them.

Or they'll just find a way to resent it even more.

Well the silver lining is that other countries are getting richer with their $80/barrel oil. So that's nice. For them.

The real pain will come in a year or so - as other countries are experiencing a high oil price, they are starting to invest capital in production growth again, and increasing their Cap Ex budgets (as the prices in their jurisdictions support the economics).

What we will see is the increased production elsewhere (US & international) will lead to the next price slump, and woe is us if our differential price is still in the 40's when global prices come back down to the 40-60 range.

It was, but when your refinery needs a constant input of natural gas to run, you can’t really do much when that supply is cut off.
