The AHL made a ton of changes and realignments in the last 10-15 years, including swaps with ECHL cities, etc.

In 2014 there were no California teams. In 2015 there were 5. Their commissioner did a pretty darn good job IMO.

Bring back the Golden Eagles. Flames best farm team ever. Honorable mention to Saint John.

Hopefully Sacramento. Salt Lake is too far away to be feasible to play against the other California teams in the shortened schedule.

Sounds like an oxymoron (at least during hockey season).

As for SLC, there are teams in Colorado and Arizona already, so it would be fine.

Sign me up for Colorado Springs. Tons of direct flights between Denver and Calgary plus you can fly out of Springs to many US cities. And World Arena holds about 8,000 which should work for the AHL.

Not really. It wouldn't be any different than what Colorado or Tucson are doing in the same Division.

Someone needs to build a 6-8000 seat arena in Airdrie.

Can't they convert New Horizon mall into one? It seems like the right size with tons of empty space. /s

Actually, what Airdrie needs is a 1000 seat arena and an AJHL team.

I can't see any way the Calgary CMA could support the NHL, WHL and AHL all together. Winnipeg is trying this year, but their AHL attendance was already cratering, and adding the WHL to the mix won't help - once the Ice actually build their new arena and play in a facility that seats more than 1400, at least.

But a return of the Salt Lake Golden Eagles sounds awesome! (< see Avatar)

Great fans with either choice.
They can even do the Aksarban Knights naming convention and call them the Saskatoon Nootaksas Knights lol.

A Sacramento resident here: I'm not sure there is a place in town for a hockey team other than the new NBA arena downtown. Can a minor league hockey team afford the rent? I don't even know if the arena is equipped for hockey.

I've seen a few games in Stockton - it's a lot of fun. Seems like a good environment to me.

If the Heat moved to Sacramento, I'd be seeing LOTS of AHL hockey - I'm a Sharks fan, but it's a LONG WAY to go for games.

Sacramento and Fresno are both big markets for a minor league team, which could be good and bad. You have a lot of potential fans, but you also have a lot of entertainment competition compared to smaller markets. Sacramento already has an NBA team, so adding another professional sport during the same months might be too much and conversely, they might also fancy themselves as a "major league" town and shun a minor league team. They are kind of right in between.

Isn't the Sleep Train Arena (the old home of the Sacramento Kings) still standing?

y'know - I kinda forgot about that. If it's available, it's not ideal, but it should be really cheap. It's outside of town so it's not 'easy' to get to. I was at the very first event there - pre-season NHL - my very first hockey game. Went there to see Gretsky, but he didn't play :-(

I'm not sure what the plans are for the old building - it was original supposed to be temporary, so it might just be demolished. I really don't think that the area could support two large arenas. There wasn't one (nor a real need for one) before the Kings arrived.
