Congrats on your new gear, which DSLR did you get?
Here is a recent macro shot, one of my current favorites.

I don't know how to post this any better, this was my first attempt at panorama pictures. I would really like some hints on the best way to do them, there are lots of great ones on here.

To me, the crooked horizon and panoroma format do not go together at all. Also, consider the rule of thirds... horizon should be 1/3rd or 2/3rd into the image. I'd also suggest that having the castle (?) about 1/3rd from the left and the left tip of the island 2/3rds in would have been an attractive composition. I like the symmetry in the clounds, maybe crop it just to the right of the third of the three fenceposts on the left?
Beyond that, hard to critique something so small.
If you're asking about technique:
- Always use manual or locked exposure and white balance (white balance is less important if shooting RAW) for panos.
- Having a tripod helps (you can even get a tripod head specially designed for it).
- Try to shoot at a focal length that minimizes distortion (this will depend on your lenses - it is a non-issue with primes, most zooms will have a barrel distortion at the wide end and pincussion distortion at telephoto with a sweet spot in between).
- I haven't used enough software to have an opinion, but Hugin seems to be well reviewed.

so it's was 'after-grad' at my wife's school this past weekend and again this year i was asked to go help with a green screen 'photo-booth'. it's a lot of fun - the kids get in goofy costumes, we take a shot in front of the green screen and then drop their image in front of various backgrounds... but in all honesty, the real reason why i LOVE the after-grad is they bring in a group called Kinshira... www.kinshira.com
they do these fire performances that are freakin' sick!!! it's sooooo cool. here's a sample....

Thanks for the help, I practiced more today taking some of you advice and some info from goggle searches, it did go better today. I started small, this is just a six shot panoramic.

I much prefer this one! A lot more visual interest.
Two critiques:
- I don't like having the water so close to the edge of the frame on the left. It's always tough to tell someone to shoot a little wider when you don't know what's outside, but I'd want a little more negative space on the left. This would also make your castle placement more "rule-of-thirdsy" - not that I follow that religiously myself, nor should you.
- Your horizon seems to bend upwards right where the castle is, or it has pincussion distortion (the whole image does, perhaps because the component images did too). A horizon that's highest in the middle works okay for me, but yours dips in the middle which is rather unnatural. When you are shooting seascapes, horizon defects tend to be more noticeable than with other material.
- A few tricks to get a good horizon straight out of the camera: if you have live view, framing your shot, then zooming in on the horizon (on the LCD only, not with the lens), and scrolling across is a great way to check your horizon. I also have a spirit level that fits into my camera's hotshoe. Both of these only work if you're shooting with a tripod. But if you get it wrong, you can always fix it in editing, and even with my tricks you're unlikely to be pixel-perfect.

I've been away for awhile, great photos everyone!!
After landscaping my yard from top to bottom I got away for a week and finally got some photos.
Here are the first couple I've got.. After I go through them all I'll hopefully have a few more to add...
