I really would like a donut that doesn't overdo the sugar content. Even Safeway's are a little too sickly sweet for me.
I might have have some involvement in a coffeeshop endevour later in the year. I wonder if we made just a really simple, fantastic donut, if that would draw in more than the walking distance crowd. I can't be the only one who prefers a dough-nut over a sugarwheel.

Those are called bagels.
The Honey Cruller is the best donut because it's saying "here, eat raw sugar, we'll just put the minimum possible amount of donut in there to make it look like you aren't completely uncivilized".

I kind of wonder what a cruller would be like without being encased in sugar. I love the airy texture of the donut itself. Might be similar to the long chinese donuts. Forget the name.

Honestly they would probably be pretty good, I agree about the texture.
I have never heard of those (Google says it's a Youtiao), now I want one!

I noticed the North Hill Safeway took out their giant doughnut cabinet and has crammed a smaller selection into the sliding drawers that used to house bagels and other gourmet buns.
The old cabinet was replaced by bagged bread racks so I can only guess it was a PITA to keep clean and not worth the expense. Hopefully the Sobeys beancounters don't mess with this any more.

Oh yeah, that’s it. They have them at various dim sums around the city. Served with a side of condensed milk for dipping. They are really good.

This is kind of the problem. I'm not sure how the super condensed sugar bagel became known as a donut. That's not really what a good donut should be like, and a lot of it comes down to the texture.
Love crullers. Take the frosted sugar off of the top of them, and what you get is a lightly sweet egg donut with a fantastic light texture. It has been ages since I've seen a good cruller in Alberta. The Tim Horton's ones are dipped in sugar, so that you have to brush off as much as possible so that you can taste the donut underneath.
If you're eating a cruller and the primary sensory impulse is sugar, you're eating a faulty cruller. It's even called a Honey Cruller! When was the last time that you had one and thought 'honey'?

Every time! "Honey, this is the sugar I want!"
I get your point though, some friends of mine from Europe complain about how stuff like donuts here just bash you over the head with sweetness and sugar, where they prefer stuff that's more subtle and better quality.

I mentioned this a few weeks ago in the local restaurant thread but I had Hoopla Donuts and was very disappointed. I tried Donut Man in Crossfield today and those donuts are spectacular. The donut itself is a perfect combination on density, fluffiness and flavor. They are so fresh and soft. The icing and different flavors are perfect in that they aren't overly sweet. I could easily finish half a dozen of those in an evening and the price is pretty decent at $30 for a dozen. The only part that sucks is that it is in Crossfield instead of Calgary.

Safeway donuts were awesome when they had the self serve cabinets and lots of selection. The donuts are still good now but they only offer the pre packaged stuff which is limited to cronuts, glazed, chocolate dipped and the cinnamon swirl ones. Even finding a Boston creme, fruit filled or maple donut is rare. I wonder if they will ever go back to the donut cabinet when Covid concerns are minimal or if the packaged donuts are here to stay.

The Donut Man in Crossfield has pretty good donuts but their best by far is the Ginger Molasses. Just a masterpiece.

So I've decided that I'm going to try to find the perfect homemade donut recipe and I'll probably gain a bit of weight doing it. Started my first batch today and they are decent but I'm not entirely satisfied. I want something a bit more fluffy. I will probably have to try again next weekend and hope for a better result. I might need to buy some new fresh yeast as well and hope for better results.

There’s a new place called “Fantasy Donuts”, not too far from Chinook, that is extremely good. Their hours and selection seems to vary.

This may cause severe angst in the Safeway doughnut thread but the best doughnut at any cost in Calgary is Con Mi Taco. I have had a few of them and they are the best dessert after duck fat tacos. Its not so much a doughnut as a dessert.
Also if you follow jelleyfish coffee they do pop ups with the same chef doing doughnuts on random Sundays. I think they just had one. They are also the best ever.

I'm picturing a slab of duck fat cut from the breast, folded into a taco and deep fried, then filled.

I'm trying not to picture anything as the description does not lend itself to an appetizing meal.

I imagined it, now you have to eat it. Them's the rules.
