This is beginning to feel like that spring when Outkast was announced at one festival and everyone went berserk, only to find out that they were announced as headliner at approximately 150 festivals that summer. Now it's Rage Against the Machine's turn to be that act.

I saw Outkast that summer (2013?), and man were they mediocre.

Kind of hard for new bands to develop/gain popularity when promoters and record companies can hire DJs for half the price to play pre-recorded songs off of a laptop for a bunch of ketamine-addled 20 somethings. That's the state of the music scene in Victoria anyways.

At least these acts have collectively sold albums and people have actually.. you know.. even heard of them. More than I can say about any of the other band names I see in this thread. I’m not that old either.

I had to retweet this from @lucy_mccourt. The festival above, with the men removed. This is a big problem in the industry:

It's your chance to learn all about the newly announced Sled Island 2020 artists in one fun night! That's right, on February 26th we'll be dropping the first crop of artists playing Sled this June. To cap that off, we're asking you to join us at Home & Away for a night of discovery, enlightenment and... honestly, fun. Kinda like Sled itself!

The evening will include:

• Music videos all-night long from newly announced Sled Island 2020 artists!
• Google-the-answer Sled Island trivia (it ain't about knowing, it's about discovering) w/ prizes for everyone who completes their sheet!
• Prizes include everything from Discovery Passes to Sled Island 2020, limited edition silk-screened posters, t-shirts, tank tops, tote bags and oh so much more!
• A trip down memory lane, featuring memorabilia and artifacts from Sled Island's 13+ years of history!
• $3.50 on almost everything – if in your mind "everything" means home brew, hi-balls, tequila and 5oz. wine!

Come have a chat with your friendly neighbourhood Sled staff member and figure out what’s in the works for Sled Island 2020, because your new favourite band is playing Calgary this June, you just don’t know it yet.

See you there!

I don't see how this a solve-able problem.

The big risks you have to take to make it as a musician plus the difficulty and danger of touring life is a huge roadblock that men are just better equipped to overcome. Plus, intelligence for men and women has a very similar median, but the standard deviation for men is a lot more dramatic (so men are more likely to be super geniuses or super morons when compared to women). Combine these two effects and the talent pool for high level musicians is always going to be predominantly men.

I agree there is something to your first point - the industry has not been a safe place for women, but I think progress is being made in that area.

I'd need to see evidence that the standard deviation in intelligence is different for men than women. Also, I'm not sure general intelligence is the same as creativity.

I think the problem has more to do with opportunity (not talent).

Since the first rock camp for girls was founded by women directly inspired by riot grrrl nearly 20 years ago, these summer enclaves have multiplied around the world; the Girls' Rock Camp Alliance includes members from Buenos Aires to Pittsburgh to Tokyo. Thousands of kids aged 8 to 18 — mostly girls, though a few coed sessions aim to educate boys and welcome non-binary children — form their own bands, write their own songs and encounter riot grrrl's feminist, anti-racist, LGBTQI-positive principles.
I see in the local scene many new female bands and artists. I don't think this was the case 20 years ago. There is still a great deal of sexism - I see often sound guys assuming female artists don't know how to operate their gear. Or, guys mansplaining to female DJs about music, in ways they never would with male DJs.

I think women are breaking down the doors, and it is great to see. They deserve a wider audience.

Femmewave is doing a great job in Calgary:

I read complaints recently how commercial country radio is dominated by male artists, even though many of the most critically acclaimed albums recently were made by women.
