Except that lack of competence can, and will, easily be used by the GOP to their advantage. Lanny is probably correct, although he won't be 25th'd because that's too embarrassing, he'll resign for "health issues" or whatever.

I do think if that were to happen, Trump wouldn't go quietly. He'd probably rail against the Republican Party and they'd get cratered in 2026 because his base goes where he goes.
Not to say that it wouldn't happen. I agree, that is probably their hope.

I don't think this is true and takes the Democratic failures off the hook. The Democrats make too big of a deal about running a woman and a woman of color that the opponent makes a big deal out of it too. It's all about victimhood. Harris was parachuted into the VP position and then parachuted into this. Then she didn't run an inspiring campaign and all that turned people off. That's all there is to it.
If a woman candidate happens naturally and runs inspiring policies (you know, not courting Liz Cheney), she can certainly win. American is more ready to put in a woman today than a black man in 2008 but Obama was inspiring, he defeated an American hero! You can't say America is more racist now than in 2008.
The republicans don't fall into this trap. McCain picked Palin as a young woman in 2008, how that go for him? That turned a lot of people off. Everyone thought it was a slam dunk that Trump would pick a female running mate this time but he didn't fall into that trap. He didn't go into Harris' lane. He chose the other lane, chose Vance, a young white guy to court young white voters, specifically in the rustbelt.
If the woman were to win the GOP nomination, like a Nikki Haley, like a Kristi Noem, like a Joni Ernst, it would happen naturally. The fact that they are women won't be made a big deal and won't be the reason they won or lost.

Wasn't the same thing said about Harris and Biden when he was elected, that the deal was at some point Biden would step down with health issues and that Harris would step in as President.
The sheer mechanics of using the 25th amendment is not that easy.

The only positive of this outcome is there won't be a repeat of January 6th, so that's nice, I guess.

I wonder how different things would have been if Garland hadn't waited 2 years before doing anything...

What involvement would the Democrats have in the process? The 25th amendment can be invoked and executed by the cabinet with approval by the Speaker of the House and Senate President, both positions held by Republicans. The only way this would involve Democrats is if Trump vetoed the process, at which point it then goes to the house and senate for a vote, requiring 2/3rds majority. If a full pardon is offered to Trump for his willingness to step aside, I see no reason for him to not go out on top after winning the election. Even if it goes to the legislative branch, there are more than enough Democrats who support Trump being removed from office without thinking twice about it. They would view working with Vance as a potential of working with someone cut from the same cloth as them and being able to reason with him. The fear associated with taking on Trump disappears.

I'm already at the acceptance phase this morning. Sadly this is just what America is now. The Divided States of MAGAville. The country we once knew and loved is gone, likely for good. As Canadians, we're just gonna have to figure out how to safely navigate this whole thing going forward. Fascism can still be defeated as long as we don't allow it to take root.
And yes, I realize that Alberta is already well on its way to becoming a full-blown MAGA province. But I still have some faith that they can be saved, and that Nenshi can hopefully pull them back from the brink.
Last night was also a big lesson in the importance of investing in quality education and health care. Watching women's rights being stripped away is an incredibly scary thing, and it could easily happen here. When you have an uneducated populace who are easily duped by a con man (twice!), This is what you get. And it's f***ing depressing.
I feel terrible for my friends and family down south who all voted for Harris and the Dems right across the board. Going into last night they were all pretty confident that she was gonna win, so I can only imagine the shock when the results came in. A good friend of mine in Colorado texted me last night and said "I truly don't recognize this country anymore, and it scares the s*** out of me."

Trump improved in almost every demographic across America.
Harris couldn't even beat Biden's 2020 numbers. Did she even beat Biden in one single county? Pretty sure I saw today on CNN that she didn't. Completely pathetic showing.
This is the price that is paid by trying to hide that Biden should have stepped down earlier to allow for the primaries to take place, and to allow proper candidates to run (like Shapiro & others).
You don't go from being VP with a terrible rating and think you can strong arm that person into a nominee who had a hope.
The Democrats have no one to blame but themselves.
But like many posters on here, instead of questioning the process and the fact that Harris should not be running, they lapped it up, and never listened to anyone that says otherwise.
I guess good time to say 'told you so.'
I guess as Canadians we can only hope that the tariff stuff doesn't blow up our trade & our dollar.
