Woman's Gold Medal Game...Whose the Referee?

In 2002, the Canadian women's hockey team earned sweet golden revenge in Salt Lake.
The 3-2 victory over the rival Americans in the gold medal game brought Canada its first Olympic hockey gold medal in 50 years, and its first ever in women's hockey.

Canada fought through an inordinate number of penalties in the game -- 13 for the Canadians to four for the U.S., including eight in a row against the Canadian side - called by an American referee.

There was an American ref? I thought you couldn't have ref's from the same country as it would be a conflict of interest.

Either way, we should smoke them.

I remember watching that game, and thinking to myself that it had to be rigged. It really felt like the Canadian Gals were in the box for the entire game.

In the end, however, they managed to pull it out, although I imagine it would have been quite the controversy if the Americans had won. Hopefully nothing similar happens this time around.

The unfortunate reality in Women's hockey as that a lot of the officials in European countries are WAY over their heads at this level of competition. The American and Canadian officials are far superior on the womens side (same goes on the men's side but to a far lesser extent).

Judge for yourselves. I was absolutely steamed at the time. It was oh so sweet when they beat Team USA and the obvious biased ref.

Why don't they use NHL referees since they're like...at the Olympics. You could go one Canadian ref and one US ref.
