It’s kinda strange - Clark is known as a Leaf. But the guy he was traded for is known as a Leaf too, and Clark as a Nordique is barely an afterthought.

To this day, I have found zero evidence of this and I consider myself a pretty good internet sleuth.

I was able to find this in the Calgary Herald archive. Jim Paek assisted on the Flames' second goal, so he shows up in the box score on the left. Sounds like the top 4 D men were sat that game, which may have been his chance to try to earn a spot.
Edit: In case the archive link doesn't work, here's a small screenshot of the boxscore.

Wendel Clark has a couple of weird ones I didn't remember:
I always forget about this one.

While he obviously never played a game for the organization, it will always be odd seeing a young Iggy in a Stars jersey.

Sort of off on a tangent, but it still seems weird to me to see Dawes and Boyd representing the Kazakhstan national team. I think it's great that they were able to pick up Kazakhstani passports and play on the world stage, but it still looks weird to me. Former Flame, Henrik Karlsson in also on their national team.
Here is former NHLer and Canadian Olympian playing professional hockey in Australia for the Brisbane Blue Tongues in 2006:
Jonathan Cheechoo in Croatia:
And of course, Fleury with Belfast:

I feel like I'll remember it because it was such a non-sensical trade.

He also somehow played a full season and part of one more in both New Jersey and Chicago.
Including time as the captain in Chicago...

It happens often in soccer. A big time European club spots some youngster in the slums of South America was bags of talent, and plucks them out and brings em over at a young age. Young kid essentially grows up in the country of his club, finds himself with a local girl, and wham bam thank you ma'am becomes a citizen.
Happens even is some smaller time leagues like Croatia (Eduardo da Silva, Sammir, and Poland (Roger). I believe Messi and Ronaldo both became Spanish citizens after living there for so long.

Speaking of which, former NHLer Shaone Morrisonn became a Croatian citizen and plays on Croatia's national hockey team.

Such a beautiful uniform. Near perfection, IMO.

It's really common in hockey too, just usually with no name players we've never heard of.
A friend of mine got a Belarusian passport 2 years ago

For some reason I loved Phaneuf and Langkow both rocking the green synergy sticks, especially in the horsehead jersey.

Funny, I don’t think Hockey-Reference lists him. At least when I looked at the players who wore numbers in the 40’s.
