There was a brief mention of Calgary in the monologue last night. Didn't seem to have any context just random Dave-ness, unless I missed something in the previous shows.

Based on the audience's reaction when he said that, it sounded like some kind of inside joke.
These shows usually have a "warm-up" guy come out before they start taping to tell some jokes, give away prizes, and take a few questions from the audience so that the audience is full of energy when the actual show starts. There was likely someone from Calgary in the audience and made a big deal about it during the warm-up.
I bet he doesn't have any official guests on tonight's show so that Bill Murray will be the final guest, but there will likely be a bunch of walk-ons. I expect a celeb-filled final Top 10 list.
Terri Garr, Bonnie Hunt, and Charles Grodin are all former frequent guests who haven't been on the show in years. For years, he's always had Jay Thomas on the final episode before Christmas to tell his Lone Ranger story. I wouldn't be surprised if they did that one last time.

Rumors are floating around that Leno was asked to appear on the show but he refused.
Letterman confirmed this, did he not?
Letterman was also asked to go on Leno's last show, and also said no. His reason being, that the last episode should be about Leno, and not the conflict they had. He feels Leno felt the same way in this situation.
Still don't understand how Leno beat Letterman in ratings all those years.
Same reason Arrested Development and 30 Rock were always dancing on the edge of cancellation while Big Bang Theory and Two and a Half Men run away with ratings.
One's humour was safe and dull, but appealed to the majority.

Corden is hilarious. If you haven't seen the series The Wrong Mans I highly recommend it.

I found that to be a interesting story. Would they really cancel a tour (inconveniencing thousands of fans) for a five minute appearance on Letterman?
I'd be interested to know more about that tour. Maybe they only had to cancel and reschedule a few dates?
I guess their first network tv appearance was on Letterman in 95 and Worldwide pants(Letterman's production company) helped in the production of Sonic Highways. So I assume the relationship between Letterman and the Dave Grohl is stronger then one might guess.
A bit of google sleuthing, and it would appear the band was on tour in 2000 going from Australia to Brazil right around that time.
