Default New Shaw Gateway Experience

Perhaps a fata? I'm surprised no one has posted this yet, although I can't find a thread.

Shaw's answer to Telus...looks like it's only available in Calgary right now (which works out perfect for me soon). Looks really cool though:

That looks cool. We just bought a PVR last summer so it will be difficult to convince the wife we should dump all our old Shaw hardware for this any time soon. I'm not holding my breath, but it would be nice if there was a hardware trade-in incentive of some sort.

I just hope they upgrade the guide across the board, that thing is hideous.

Any reports on how it works? And is the hardware actually available in Calgary?

I'd hate to play beta tester on this.... might give it a month or two.

According to posters on Digital Home Canada, a trade in program of sorts is in effect: http://www.digitalhome.ca/forum/show...72#post1259072

Quote:
PVR Swap/ Trade Program Options:
Customers can do a 1:1 Swap of their current Owned HDPVR for 1 Total Home Portal. Available on additional Portals only (N/A on the $598 Gateway + 1 Portal)
Customers who own a Gateway and Total Home Portal can trade in up to 3 Shaw PVR's for additional portals. Only the following Boxes are eligible for the Trade up program:
  1. DCT 3080 - Motorola Standard Definition PVR
  2. DCT 6208 - Motorola HDPVR
  3. DCT 6412 - Motorola HDPVR
  4. DCT 6416 - Motorola HDPVR
  5. DCT 3416 - Motorola HDPVR
  6. DCT 3400 - Motorola HDPVR
  7. Pace Tahoe HDPVR
  8. Pace Aspen HDPVR
  9. Pace Whistler HDPVR
  10. Pace Summit+Expander HDPVR

For the Easy Own Plan clarification.

Portals upfront are $178+tax or $5/month +Tax over 36 months
There are no fees such as Admin fee with the Easy Own Plan, it is simply as above.

Talked with a Shaw employee a couple of weeks ago that was beta testing it. Said it was pretty cool. Sounds like it might be a little buggy out the gate but expects to be fixed either before launch or shortly after (typical beta stuff).

edit: http://www.shaw.ca/Gateway/Features/

hmmm, looks like it's web enabled (under the coming soon section). Hopefully this paves the way for editing of pvr timers with a web interface or phone app.

I can't imagine that kind of stuff wouldn't be added quickly out of the gate. I really wish I could have held off on the PVR purchase last year. Of course, there was no way of knowing then that this was coming down the pipe. Talk about good decisions with poor results...

I don't have any experience with the Telus system... Is that just one type of box? Or does it require the a server and client PVRs like the shaw system?

Well this kind of sucks. I am loaned a pvr from shaw and my other pvr is the pace HD box + expander I wonder if that counts. Will be hard to pony up 600 bucks plus I need 2 more portals

So someone I know who knows a lot about this stuff just mentioned that the Gateway was cobbled together in a hurry so there was something positive for Shaw to announce to shareholders. There are more well-thought-out products and services on the way in the next year or so that aren't a bunch of old hardware and buggy backends hacked together in a hurry.

D. None of the above. I don't expect anyone to accept that tidbit as gospel but you can take it for what it's worth.

that's generally Shaw's answer to any new technology they release. i'd avoid the gateway on release and give it at least 6 months-1 year for all the bugs to be worked out. anyone who signed up for their digital phone when it was released can probably attest

I am pumped about this development. I've been waiting some time for Shaw to do something like this. A PVR per tv never made much sense, central recording for playback on any connected TV makes far more sense. But as others have said, wait for them to get the bugs out of the equipment and I'll be in 100% for sure.

This it quite unexpected, I was talking to a Shaw rep about exactly this kind of thing a month or so ago and she said it was coming but was another year away. Fantastic news.
