Default Jim Prentice and three others involved in fatal plane crash

Situation unfolding following the plane crash in Kelowna, there are multiple unconfirmed reports this morning that former Premier Jim Prentice was 1 of 4 killed in a plane crash near Kelowna. Will update if anything changes.

I've received information from a VERY solid source regarding former Alberta Premier Jim Prentice has died in a plane crash. Still digging.

Here is my post from the aviation thread about the crash and flight tracker log:

Cessna Citation flying from Kelowna to Calgary-Springbank crashed, looks like shortly after departure. All four on board dead.

This appears to be the flight log from Flightaware, if you click on the track log you'll note that the last confirmed report (from Vancouver Centre) shows a descent rate of 2200 feet per minute.

http://flightaware.com/live/flight/C...10ZZ/CYLW/CYBW

Track log:

http://flightaware.com/live/flight/C.../CYBW/tracklog

You can see that all reports after that one are simply Flightaware estimating the aircraft position. Had it still been flying Calgary ATC would have picked it up and the flight map would have shown the green line track until landing at Springbank instead of the grey estimate line.

Crappy...

Last data point descending at -2200 ft/minute! Yikes.

Sad news.

What causes a plane to descend like that? Wind?

I've heard from a few people Kelowna has some crazy mountain you have to clear on takeoff (I knew a friend of a friend that crashed and died there), would that be a factor?

I don't want to start speculating what caused it, but isn't it pretty difficult to fly a cessna from Kelowna to Calgary over the rockies?

Cessna Citation Jet, this isn't a 150 we are talking about here, it is a twin-engine business jet.

I assumed falling out of the sky would make it descend that quickly.

That's a tragedy, despite the disastrous end to his political campaign. The guy spent his life trying to serve Canadians and Albertans.

Condolences to his family and Friends.

That cessna is a twin jet.

Obviously it crashed, so something was wrong, but isn't 2200 feet per minute decent kind of normal?

I post and admin on a Calgary Airport Spotters facebook page, one of the members confirms his father was the pilot.

Not Prentice's father. The father of the member on our page.

That's what I was wondering. Doesn't seem like that fast of a drop really.

Rough math, but I think that's about 12m per second. Could have been a stall, but I am no expert. It sounds like a pretty fast fall. You would think if both engines failed, it would glide at a slower decent than that. Again, just guessing.

-2200 at 4800 feet shortly after takeoff? No definitely not normal.

Geez, mostly just airplane discussion in here. What a shock, even more tragic with his father being the pilot. Condolences.

I can't even imagine how tough that will be if his mother is still alive.
