Default Building in the back yard

Any building code experts here?

So late last week the neighbor, who recently put a concrete pad in the backyard, has a large package of wood dropped off in the backyard and by Sunday night he has erected this monstrosity in the back yard. It looks like its big enough to park multiple work vans or large trucks in and is considerably larger than a standard 2 car detached garage.

For reference, that is a 6ft fence beside it, so it has to be about 12' tall before he puts the roof on, which to me seems to be well above building code. Anybody who might have a better idea of city regulations able to pipe in? Im not sure whether I should be calling this thing in or not.

Looks like a ten foot wall height. I think max is15 feet. It looks a little close to the lane way in the back but depending on lot coverage it's probably fine. 311 or the city website will tell you if there are permits. They're supposed to display their permit on site too.

Max wall height seems to be 9'10 with max height up to the peak of the roof at 15'. Keep in mind thats a 6' foot fence beside it, not a standard 5'.

Well it looks like the wall of the garage starts about a foot higher than the base of the fence, so if it's not in compliance it sure looks close. Why don't you just run over there with a tape? It'll take like 5 seconds and then you'll know.

Interesting to see the things that piss people off. I'd be stoked for my neighbour and totally jealous if he started building a sweet garage like that, but I get mad at a-holes that stink up the neighbourhood with backyard fires and dogs that bark.

Could be a flat roof going on or very low slope. And I think the fence is a bit lower than the bottom of the garage. It would be on the ground whereas the garage is sitting up on a pad. . I think the walls are 10. Probably 9'10" if that's max. I can spare you the tape measuring. I'm a savage three point shooter. I'll dribble by like Van Exel and tell you within a centimeter how high it is.

Definately 12 feet tall as it looks like 3 layers of full size chip board

The fence starts about ~2' lower than the framing, so ya, 10' looks about right. He would either be framing it with studs for a 10' ceiling height or 12' height, and it doesn't look like 12' members.

Either way, this is splitting hair territory; go talk to the guy and ask like a good neighbor rather than "calling it in".

He may have also applied for a relaxation on the height. There are garages with 12 foot wall heights in the city that still comply with the overall 15 foot limit.

If you call it in to rat him out, be sure to let him know you did it.

I think you should get a hobby and not worry about what your neighbors are doing. Unless of course this garage is a personal affront to you, in which case I would spend your time reflecting and see if you can pinpoint the exact time in your life you became the worst. Then share so the rest of us can avoid it like the plague.

If it were me, I'd be concerned with what goes on on my side of the fence, not my neighbor's.

Go here and see if he has a permit listed https://maps.calgary.ca/myProperty/

He can be 4.6m max finished floor to roof peak. 3.0m max finished floor to underside of the eaveline. 3.0m finished floor to u/s roof truss.

How far do you go with this logic.

If he is 2 inches over yeah I would agree with this but if he is 2 feet over isn't that a reasonable thing to complain about? At some point the building in his neighbours yard will affect his enjoyment of his property.

If it gets to the point where my neighbour is doing something I find completely egrious I would just talk to them.

Easiest thing to do is just check to see if he has a permit. If there is one I place, there's nothing you can do. If he had no permit, then you can call 311 and ask them to check it out.
