Default Lloyd's Roller Rink is Closing

Looks like Lloyd's Roller Rink is closing. Their last public skate is happening in February 2018.

Another Calgary institution bites the dust... now where will people have their kids' birthday parties?

I grew up walking distance from there. Nostalgia has me considering a return trip to go before they close. Xenomorph arcade game for life.

Lloyd's was still open? That place seemed like a relic in HS and that was 15 years ago.

And it was a relic when I graduated high school in 1994.

Lloyds is packed whenever we take the kids there. Probably the most popular place in the SW to hold birthday parties for kids 7-10. And way cheaper than the Flying Squirel type places. I know my kids are gonna be choked.

Sad to see the end of one of the few remaining places in this city where parents could remember going themselves as kids.

I wonder why they're closing and if it's a money issue, should the city step up and save it?

I'd argue Lloyds brings more good to the community than the Flames.

Really?
Wonder if the charities for which the Flames have donated millions over the years would agree.
I get that people are sour on the building situation but geez
Yup a roller rink is more important to the city than the flames...

Well, its almost certainly a money issue, my mom volunteers with the Girl Guides in Calgary and goes to Lloyd's something like 2-3 times a year and its almost shockingly cheap to take 20 girls there.

But its also likely a cultural thing. Who roller-skates anymore? Who is going to pay to do it?

It a shame though, Lloyd's has been a Calgary institution since the time of the Dinosaurs.

My guess: The Rent/Property Taxes in that location are alarmingly high.

Could also be something like the owner is retiring and there is no one to take over the business, based on how long it's been around

Why would it necessarily be a money issue? 5 months is a lot of notice for a money issue.

Probably closing cause of the rise in the minimum wage.

It's just as likely an owner is retiring and nobody wants to buy a marginal business, or lease is expiring and they can't afford the renewal. Both of which are money issues, at least indirectly.

Thats likely when their Lease is up and due to be renewed.

Thats my guess, but the suggestion that the owner wants to retire and theres no succession plan or anyone willing to keep at it is also a good one.

How many people work there though? I haven't been there in over a decade(probably 2 decades now that I think about it) but I only really remember there being 1 person at the admission desk, 2 people handing out skates, a couple people working in the cafeteria and a DJ. Add $1 to the admission prices and it likely covers the increase if that were the case.

You know, thinking about this more, its in Kingsland right? Isnt it right down the street from the Kingsland Community Association? If you're right and its a succession issue they should just take it over and run it communally.

If thats the issue and its (relatively) profitable but at least can pay its own bills it would be cool if the Community took it over and kept it operating.

If it is profitable it would be a good move for the city to take it over. Seems like it would be a cheap public recreation investment.

Well why aren't they closing next week, or waiting until October of next year?

Walk us through why it's "probably" this issue.

even if the business breaks even or there's a very small loss, I'd think it'll be worth while for the city to take over

Its more tongue in cheek.Every business closing in Calgary seems to be because of minimum wage.
