Having an "N" on the back of your car is a condition of your license and not having it on your car while driving anywhere in Canada can result in a ticket (just to clarify). Its the same as wearing glasses for a condition.

Just wanted to bump this,

My girlfriend has had her N for 4 years+ and just got her full BC license 6 months ago and is now moving to Alberta. Alberta website says if you don't have 2 years of class 5 license experience they transfer you into the GDL program. Wondering if anyone recently has negotiated with success? It seems unfair to move someone who has their full license with lots of driving experience back to GDL.

To be fair, it sounds like she only has 6 months of full license. Looking at the website it shows she was eligible 2.5 years ago to get the N restriction taken off. Devil's advocate here- did she only do it 6 months ago because she wasn't confident she would pass?

Don't get me wrong, my own wife has been on a GDL here for many more years than she should. Combination of not wanting to spend money, effort, and lack of confidence.

She should really bite the bullet and get it, so that she can drink and drive. As near as I can tell, that is the only real benefit anyway. Which seems odd.

The 'N' in BC is a nightmare, in AB drinking and driving is the only enforced difference in my experience.

Ironically when I was 17 and moved from Alberta with a GDL, they gave me a full class 5 in BC.
