It also gives Tre flexibility in case he's looking at other UFAs. Chiasson is a fallback option.

If Chiasson is gone, Flames offside calls will go down 25%. He either doesn't know the rule, or is just really bad at reading the play.

Tkachuk in the bottom 6? Not a chance.

I'd imagine that if the Flames sign a UFA then Chiasson is gone and Ferland takes a spot in the bottom-6. Alex is not a guarantee to be back anyway and if they agree to terms with someone like a Vrbata, Marleau, or Williams during the negotiating period then I think the Flames will let him explore his options. I believe that they like Versteeg more than Chiasson anyway.

Not trying to attack you post, but Frolik is a RW.

The lineup locks look something like this:

Gaudreau - Monanhan - _______
Tkachuk - Backlund - Frolik
______ - Bennett - Brouwer
Bouma - Stajan - ________

Your extras with their proper position:
Ferland (LW)
Lazar (RW/C)
Janko (C)

It's hardly a bottom-6. I foresee the Flames rolling the top three lines pretty evenly this coming season, with the top line getting ~17 minutes, the second line getting ~17, and the "third" line getting ~16. The fourth line would get the remaining ~11, with certain guys getting more or less due to special teams.

A guy like Versteeg could slot in on paper on the fourth line, but clock in at 14 minutes a game because he'd likely stay on the #1 PP unit.

Frolik playing LW is something that's been debated in various threads here and there, and it makes some sense: it allows Brouwer to slot in on the right side and maybe regain some mojo playing beside two much better players. Also, Frolik is a left-handed shot and played left wing for much of his Panthers and Blackhawks career... heck, he even centred the Hawks' Saad-Frolik-Kane line for awhile.

Ferland's "proper position" is both wings. I mean, did he not play right wing on the top line for much of the second half of last season? Not sure why you're listing him as a strict gauche man.

Also, I'm willing to bet a fair sum of cash that Bouma won't be in the NHL next year.

Here's the weird thing: Ferland ALSO has arbitration rights and Treliving didn't flinch on qualifying him. Either he doesn't think nearly as highly of Chiasson and is comfortable with losing him, or he's worried that his comparable contracts are going to drive up the price on a guy he thinks is replaceable.

He must've learned from the Bouma deal.

For 950k, I'd bring Chiasson back to play on the fourth line. His underlying fancy stats aren't bad for a player of his calibre either.

Good defensively, big, skates reasonably well. As 4th liners go, he's fine.

Expect a great year for Kulak after he absorbs Culkin's power through the quickening.

Frolik is a LW/RW. Ferland is a LW/RW. Hudler was a LW/RW.

Lots of wingers have no problems switching sides. Which is why some of us think Tkachuk up with Gaudreau-Monahan might be worth a try at some point in the future.

Based on the bodies, I think we will either only sign one of Versteeg, Chiasson, or other forward UFA or Jankowski gets bumped out to become the first call up (which is ok by me I like high potential depth players in the AHL). Either that or some bodies need to move out in a trade whereby less NHL roster players come back than go out.

Thing is, who would move out - Bouma, Stajan, Brouwer? Maybe with such a lacklustre UFA crop there will be a taker for Brouwer but I'm not so sure that the Flames are so eager to move him as some of us fans.

I guess what I meant by proper position is the one that they are traditionally slotted to play.

Frolik was brought in as a utility player so I guess he can swing back to LW, but it doesn't make a whole lot of sense given that the Flames really don't have any other effective RWer's. So why take the only guy who plays that side well?

Ferland is a LW that actually played decent on the top line RW, but is a natural RW. That's why I listed him in the unknown section. He is a LW but can play on that top line RW, but I don't think that is the best possible soluition.

And I would take that bet on Bouma...

Yup, I agree with most of that, as said above.

No big surprises for me other than qualifying Linden Vey. Can't really see a situation where he gets into the lineup based on call up history last year.

I would guess one more year to see if Wotherspoon can make a jump to full time NHLer or at least 7th dman. Maybe 2 year deal for Kulak to see if he can do the same.

Ferland is due for a raise, don't you think?

I think that is exactly it. Treliving is interested in bringing Chiasson back, but only at the right price. If not, then sayonara!

One was protected in the expansion draft the other wasn't.

With Ferland there is also the potential element. With Chiasson there isn't, what you see is essentially what you get.

Even if Ferland gets an overpay in arbitration, there is more of a chance he will actually perform be worth the contract.
