I really want to see a Wayne Simmonds type of contract.

The league now knows what Draisatl are capable so we'll see if he can repeat. Sam Bennett, on the other hand still hasn't reach his potential and next season might be his breakout season.
I'll say $2M - $3M for 3 years.
Yes he was. Draisaitl played on the wing with McDavid a lot last season.

I think so those options are too high. Bennett has proven nothing to suggest he should get more than 2 million on a 2 year deal.

My guess is 2 years at 1.75 per year.

I don't totally disagree, he has no leverage or results to push his contract any higher than Ferland or Versteeg at this stage in his career. He likely doesn't want to miss out on any cash and is gunning for a one year deal so he can get his AAV back up where he thinks it belongs. I wouldn't be surprised to see a 1.5x1 deal. That's in the benefit of both parties.

Flames will spend to the cap. I will be interested to see what Tre does with the leftovers.

Wayne Simmonds was coming off a 28 goal season when he got his long extension. He signed a 2 year bridge contract first at $1.75 million a year.

Agree - would like to see this resolved in the next month. I don't want another Johnny situation where Sam sits out camp until the contract is agreed. Let's hope Tre gets it done so Sam can just focus on his hockey and hopefully have his best year yet!

If you look at CapFriendly the Flames have over $7 million, but CapFriendly is not including a 13th forward or 7th defenseman.

NHL numbers includes 6 dmen signed, 2 goalies, overage amt, buyout amt, and 12 forwards signed.

That leaves just under 7 mil to sign Bennett and Kulak. and then Hathaway or Iginla etc

Jean-Gabriel Pageau's new contract is a good comparable - but he did have arbitration rights.

If it's a bridge deal, 3 years at $3M seems like a safe landing spot.

Certainly not the worst comparable, but I wouldn't call it an especially good one either.

Pageau, coming off a great playoff, is also much more refined than Bennett. He doesn't have the raw potential, but he's already a strong shutdown center. The Senators are not shy about putting him up against Crosby's line, and he's a decent even-strength producer, good at face-offs and is the Senators go to penalty-killer. He's closer to a more gritty Backlund, especially before Backlund broke out offensively, but given his hockey IQ, I think Pageau is on a similar trajectory as Backlund.

Again, I have no issue saying that Bennett has more potential, but based on their plays last season they really aren't comparable. Pageau was much more of a complete player, and an actual center, of course he's 24 too.

I think going 3 years is the safe play. In 2 years the Flames have Tkachuk, Lazar, Ferland, and Smith all coming for renewal and all but Smith need raises and possible substantial ones.

In 3 years the Flames have Brouwer, Frolik, Hamonic, Brodie, Stone all expiring with some big tickets. Likely Brodie and Hamonic are the only 2 from that group that needs a deal. Give Sam 3 years and hope he cashes in those 3 years when the team has the money.

Pageau is 4 years older than Bennett and has 3 more years of pro experience. He had arbitration rights and the three year deal buys one year of UFA status for the Sens.

Their stats over the last two seasons have been close, with Pageau putting up a few more points in each season. Other than that, they're not really comparable for all the other things that go into determining a player's contract value.

Yeah. Pageau is a poor man's Backlund and doesn't have the potential of Sam but JGP is definitely worth more right now than Bennett should be.

No way should Sam get north of or even $3 million.

That's not happening. 2 years or less is probably what he's being told by his agent.

I feel it's better take on the 3rd year even if it's expensive. If Sam's camp pushes for most of it to be a guaranteed signing bonus with high $, then it's probably still worth it - at most you're taking on 1 "maybe" year with the worst case scenario being that he's an overpaid bust for one year (but with same AAV anyways).

It pushes the AAV up by a solid million per year, but it's better IMO to have guaranteed money off the books allocated to him, rather than hoping to get rid of a Stone or Brouwer through trade/buyout to get that space.

No way Bennett should be getting $3 mil AAV or $3 mil + AAV on his new contract.
