Do people still watch games on TV when they are live?
I can't deal with commercials or talking heads anymore, so it's usually the morning after.

I tend to wait until the first period is well underway, then start it and skip commercials. If I catch up at the intermission, I'll watch another show, then back to the game. I try to catch up before the end of the last period.

Impossible to try and PVR games in this day and age. smart phones, availability for every game on TV, radio...you basically have to go total dark to do it and even then still probably have it spoiled by someone sending a text.

You're asking that like you would for sure be in the majority and only old, behind the times seniors would still watch live, lol. I would turn that snark around on you and ask if anyone actually regularly PVR's games and watches them well after the fact.
- It's almost impossible to not get spoilered on a hockey game in a Canadian city unless you walk around constantly screaming with your fingers in your ears
- Do you not work most mornings after a game?
- Knowing a score is final and waiting to watch the game feels brutal, I can't do it
- Give me control of a taped hockey game and I won't end up watching much of the game, and at that point it's better to just watch those condensed games on youtube (8-10 minutes)

Does this have to do with TV audiences, or where more money comes from? Or is it just a "fluke" of the schedule that it looks this way?
|
Entirely.
Im actually stunned there is a Saturday that the Leafs aren't on.
As for the Oilers and Ottawa...i think both were expected to be among the best in the league by execs this year which also draws eyeballs to the tv's which is how they set their ad rates.

^ I saw an article in the Toronto star lamenting on how the leafs don’t have as many Saturday night home games as usual this season. It seemed to be more a scheduling fluke.

Do people still listen to terrestrial radio? Derp.
Some people have these special buttons on their remotes called "mute". It silences commercials and anything else you don't want to hear. Check for that feature on your next TV purchase.
As for the dinosaurs that still watch live games, there are a couple different techniques, such as starting to watch at the end of the first and banking 40 minutes of PVR time so that you're caught up around midway third. Then there's the actual live game experience where you watch the game, and spend the commercials reading CP. During intermissions you can eat dinner on the first one, and get creative on the second one. Some people smoke up, some people sex up.
I can't believe I just wasted 3 minutes typing this out. It's just so lame when people make these kind of dumass comments. Yeah, like most people wake up in the morning and watch a fricken hockey game from last night. Everyone has an extra hour in the morning to watch a hockey game on power skip. Everyone goes dark all night and turns off their phones to avoid text messages and updates. Nobody posts on CP during the game, they just suppose what might be happening in the game, and wake up extra early the next day to watch it.

This is what we do but we normally wait till the end of the 1st period before we start watching. We can skip all the commercials and the talking heads and just watch the play.
It has nothing to do with being old by the way. It has to do with being home and not wanting to deal with the b.s. And it's really easy to turn off the other devices so we don't get the results before we've seen the game.

Wow. No need to be uncivil guys.
Just saying “Sat night broadcast count” seems of less importance than it used to be.
I get up early with my 4 year old and we watch the games together before preschool/work.
Anyway, carry on.

I have two younger boys that go to bed by 8. I tend to start every game at 815 Pacific and I ffwd through commercials.
If a game starts at 5pm local time for me, I have to go dark for those 3 hours.
That’s my routine ...as I’m sure many of you were curious.

No wonder people hate the Toronto sports media.
There's only 3 Saturdays all season that the Leafs don't have a game, and one of them is next week when the Sens and Habs are playing their outdoor game.

Edmonton gets favoured because of McDavid and al those crossovers. Ottawa because they went pretty far in the playoffs last year and they have become a major rival of the Leaves.

Saturday night games are the easiest for me to watch so it is annoying there seem to be less for the Flames this year while the Leafs and Oilers are on almost every week. I understand Calgary games are not the biggest TV draw however.
I used to watch almost every game recorded however it became too difficult to find the time, too stressful to avoid spoilers, and too much temptation to fast forward. Now I only watch live and find other things to do during the breaks. Interestingly an episode of Jeopardy, fast forwarded through the commercials and interviews, fits perfectly into an intermission.

I do the same and when I play it just right I get live just moments before a Monahan OT winner. It's my game within the game.

Believe it or not, the Leafs are not 3 Saturdays, they are on 23/26 Sat. There's 1 correction, the Oilers are on 19 Sat.

Those are the best Sat. of the season to watch, Dec. 16 and 30 and Jan. 13.

I watch as many as I can live, but when the game doesn't start until around midnight and I have to get up at 5am, I sometimes don't get to finish them. No way I'd let that happen during playoffs though
I really enjoy the dead air during commercials on Game Centre because I have zero patience for commercials either.
