I would like to point out how incredible it is that Nik Lidstrom won the Norris 4 times as a 35+ aged player.

I just hope Gio doesn't suffer a fluke injury down the stretch and is able to take his game to even the next level in the playoffs. I cringed when he blocked that shot vs the Isles near the end last game. But that just goes to show the type of player he is.

The man deserves to have a good cup run on his resume.
‘06 Hurricanes are a bit of an outlier in that regard.

06' Canes had a tremendous advantage in the Finals. An opponent who was no good.

He was a lock for the Norris in 2015 too.
And in that season, he injured himself in the last minute of the game against the Devils on Feb 25th, 2015, who they are playing tonight, on the 27th. Let's hope history doesn't repeat itself.

Kind of silly how there's only one award for defensemen, but 5 or 6 that primarily go to forwards. A full hockey lineup has has 12 F, 6D. I'd push for 3 Dmen awards total: offensive by pts, best defensive, and overall: it would match the Art Ross, Selke, and Hart. Overlap is fine and encouraged, the same way the Art Ross is often the Hart.

Good point. I assume this stems from the fact that, 'back in the day' when these awards were implemented, it was common knowledge that the forwards were streaks ahead of the defencemen. In today's game, if at all. Hopefully it gets addressed soon enough.

There should be an Orr and a Potvin award.

As far as I know there are only four awards that the NHL bestows that are position-specific, and two of them are for goalies: The Selke, the Norris, the Vezina and the William Jennings. Three awards are determined entirely by year-end statistics: The Art Ross, the Rocket Richard, and the William Jennings.

Forwards are eligible to win six awards. Defensemen are eligible to win six. A defenseman is not precluded from winning the Hart Trophy, nor the Art Ross, nor even the Rocket Richard. I could see the addition of an arbitrary award for points by a defenseman, but if anything, that should be it.

While I'm at it, there should also be an Iginla award.

Norris would be sweet, but Conn Smythe would be better.

Gio has just become only the 4th defenceman in NHL history to get 60 points after the age of 35.

Lidstrom
MacInnis
Zubov
Giordano

4 years ago almost to the day in NJ, where his personal playoff hopes get dashed after this season ending injury.
Tonight, GWG.

Would Gio be the first undrafted player, since the draft started, to win the Norris?
