Wonder why they didn't just do a 3 way?

Islanders: Duchene
Flames: Hamonic
Avs: Islanders 1st 2018, Flames 1st 2018, Flames 2nd 2018, Flames 2nd 2020

2 1sts and 2 2nds is a great return for Duchene

Hamonic and a 1st is not acceptable value for Duchene.

I wouldn't pull the trigger on that trade either.

Even if they chose to then flip Hamonic, they would have grabbed two 1st round picks and two 2nd round picks...that's not bad.

I get it - they want a young top pairing d-man (...younger than 26 apparently), but really - who do they think they could get?

Are they trying to replicate the Johansen/Jones deal? Who would be Jones this time around? Are they trying to land Hanifin? That seems unlikely.

Hamonic doesn't really make any sense for the Avs who have Johnson and Barrie on the right side and are rebuilding. Hamonic going to the Flames who are a playoff team looking to be pushed over the top makes sense.

Hamonic is a nice piece and everything, ideal fit for Calgary with role/cap hit, but he's not the type of player you build a trade for Duchene around.

Matt Duchene is a 26 year old 30 goal scoring defensively responsible/reliable centre with impressive skating.

Would anyone on this board have moved Backlund for Hamonic + 1st?

Gilles and Hanowski for Price but we have to do it now for it to make sense.

Duchene is also 2 years away from being a UFA and by the sounds of it, Duchene's camp is counting down the days.

Each day that goes by, the return decreases.

I would have made the Backlund trade easily under the right circumstance. For instance if we knew Jankowski was going to be a defensively responsible top 3 line centre next year I make that deal. If we didn't have anyone like Bennett or Jankowski in the system then no I don't make that trade

If Calgary was hitting the reset button like the Avs my interest would be geared to top prospects rather than in prime vets.

Also the Avs have a weak blueline but respectable on the right side. Hamonic didn't solve any issues for the Avs so I understand why they said no

Exactly. Pavs and Thornton center the same line depending which side of ice. Although different handedness is part of that.

How is Sakic screwing things up? Duchene is a huge trade chip for him and he has to maximize the value. Hamonic and a 1st doesn't do anything at all for the Avs.

Don't get me wrong, Hamonic is perfect for the Flames, but he's not a home run for the Avs.

If Duchene's agent is pissed, I'd tell him to shut up, we'll move him when it makes sense, and if he wants to sit out, then sit out and we'll stop paying him.

He is screwing things up by playing hard ball and it could really backfire if he waits this out. Like I said above, Duchene is 2 years away from being a UFA and a team looking to acquire him will want him for as long as possible.

It also doesn't help your dressing room when you have a guy who clearly doesn't want to be there anymore. Sakic also doesn't really look like he has a defined direction he wants to take this team. Colorado produced some of the lowest win totals ever in the last decade - something has to give.

If Sakic had accepted Hamonic + a 1st, he'd have been able to flip Hamonic for a 1st and 2 2nds, meaning that his return for Duchene would have been 2 1sts and 2 2nds.

That, sir, is a colossal ####-up.

Duchene is a UFA in two years and won't be re-signing. That is more than fair return.

Rumors of Sakic talking to the Penguins and moving Duchene there for someone (possibly like Maata, a pick and prospect).

If Hamonic = a 1st and two 2nds then that means Duchene is not worth two firsts and two seconds?

Man when did the trade value for these players ####ing hit the moon.

I remember when a first and a B+ prospect meant fair value for a high scoring top 6 forward.

Even the Hamonic value seemed a cut more than it should be for a top 4 d-man. I guess times have changes and I'm just behind now.

It's tough to gauge the value for top end C because they rarely get traded. Only comparables for Duchene really are:

Johansen for Jones (23 - Coming off of a 63 then 71 pt season)

Seguin for Eriksson, Morrow, Smith, Fraser (21 - Coming of a 64, then 55 point season (pro-rated due to lockout))

O'Reilly for Zadorov, Grigorenko, Compher, 2nd (24 - Coming off of 64, then 55 point season)

Matt Duchene: 26 - coming off of a 59 , then 41 point season

I don't know but those trade values seem pretty close to Hamonic + 1st or 2 1sts & 2 2nds to me. And if anything those guys would have had more value than Duchene at the time of their trades since they were younger, had more years left until UFA, and had more productive season leading into the trade.
