Yep, the term and AAV are a NTC in themselves. This will go down as one of the worst contracts in the history of planet earth.

The Sharks didn't really have a choice on this one and had plenty of cap room to make it happen. Kane turned them from a playoff bubble team to a contender.

As a Flames fan Kane would fill a massive hole on the team however am happy the 1st rounder was spent on Hamonic considering the contract differences.

They are still a bubble team. It's not a great overall roster and they got handled by the Knights. I give a lot of credit to DeBoer for getting them to play better than the sum of their parts but this team isn't nearly as talented as past Sharks teams. I can see them making the playoffs next season but I wouldn't be surprised if they had a down season and missed the playoffs as well.

I think it's an exaggeration that they got handled by Vegas.

I watched most of the games and other than the opening game, it can be argued that they may have outplayed the Knights and Fleury was the star of the show.

But I agree that the Sharks are, like most teams in he NHL, a bubble team that could or could not make the playoffs.

The margins today are juts that thin.

I have to give the California teams credit as they have all been good for a long time and seem to be hanging in their despite aging rosters even if they are all treading water at this stage. At the same time it's probably an indictment of how poor the progress of the Flames, Oilers, Canucks, and Coyotes has been as it appears none of them have been able to take that next step ad challenge these teams on an annual basis. The end is probably still coming for these teams though as the Knights don't appear they will go away and maybe one day one of the Alberta teams will be good.

I feel like SJ felt they needed to do this, with Thornton, Couture and Pavelski all aging and due to hit UFA, but in the same stroke, if the 3 guys above chose not to re-sign, that could be a major blow to that "strong room". I wonder if it's going to become the beginning of the end to an era in SJ.

Trade a first round pick to Buffalo in order to pay Evander Kane 7 million bucks for 7 years, or trade a first round pick to Montreal in order to pay Max Pacioretty 4.5 million bucks for one year?

Jeez.

That's a lot of scratch and term for a guy that is essentially a 50 point player, who hasn't been all that durable, and is rumored to be bad in the room.

Yeah, but hasn't the justification for the contract from many in this thread that he will actually surpass his career highs???

Even if he develops a more complete game, his age still indicates he will be declining from his peak years of ~40-50 points per year? So now a 30 point a year guy is worth 7m? The Brouwer comps aren't as laughable as a lot of you guys think. (and that's coming from a guy who has no skin in the game. I'm not a flames fan, so I have no rose colored glasses of any kind.)

Sidenote, here is a photo of Brouwers shoulder when he was in Rockford; this was the start of the 08-09 campaign for the qc flames.
Spoiler!

It's a good deal all around. I feel the California teams could all take a step back next year and miss the playoffs. This will help keep SJ in the playoffs. Maybe slightly overpaid, but not drastically.
