Soderberg is a serviceable 3rd centre, the only issue really is that he is paid too much, but you can count on him on the PK.

They dont have their 3rd rd pick next year so if its an offer sheet, its a big one.
They should make a run at Point or Aho. Or maybe their meeting with Panarin went well.

He had 20 goals and 50 points last year, and has pretty consistently been better than 0.5 pts/GP. Soderberg is better than a "serviceable" second line centre, and a fantastic option for the third line. People's expectations for middle-roster players tend to be wildly unrealistic.

Marner, Aho, or Point. I bet it is one of the three. Colorado just moved their second/third best centre, and they are not likely bringing Matt Duchene back. They need an upgrade at centre.

I like Soderberg, He was a big part of Colorado's success. I am of the opinion that Backlund will share the same trajectory as him. A career 2nd centre who will gracefully contribute as a 3rd centre as he gets older. Calling him a 3rd centre was not intended to be a slight, his 23 goals was a career year, I just have a hard time expecting him replicate that at age 34. Good teams put players in a position to succeed, and I think that he thrives in the shut down/secondary scoring role of a 3rd liner.

I do think it's likely that Colorado knows they won out on a bigger UFA as they do have a ton of cap space. But Colorado also hasn't been a cap-ceiling team. I don't know enough about their situation, maybe they do have the go-ahead to go to the cap, but if they are looking to spend in that 65-70M that they seem to have been spending to recently then this move could also be just to accommodate that.

40M as is in cap right now. A 1b type goalie to play with Grubauer and of course re-signing Rantanen and they're probably already at 50M+. Then they still need about 7 forwards signed and Zadarov. Not all seven forwards are minimum wage either, Kerfoot, Andrighetto and Compher will make a bit. So that's going to bring them to around 65M without getting a prize-UFA.

They should trade MacKinnon for future consideration.

I don't think it's RFA offersheet related. You don't move a servicable player for a chance to sign an offer-sheet that can just be matched. Now you are out both your third line center and don't have anything to show for it.

I completely agree. I was challenging your description of him as "serviceable" on the third line. Even at his age he is still a lot better than that.

I have no clue one way or the other, but they could be preparing an offer sheet, while having a backup plan if it falls through.

Not crazy to think with Free Agency right around the corner.

If Soderberg, on an expiring deal, is worth a 3rd and Connauton, then Frolik is probably worth a 4th.

Maybe they are targeting Dzingel? or even Pavelski?

Maybe after the courting period they know they're getting a centre on July 1st, AKA Dzingel.

Connauton will round out defensive depth and help out at the beginning of the season if Cole and/or Johnson are not ready to go. It may also signal Nemeth is not returning.

But I can see him having interest in getting paid what he is worth. We'll see if these rumors of them offering him 6 million/season are true.

Aho is as good as Auston Matthews, who got over $11M. Canes better be prepared to pay at least $10M

Frig... we aren't getting anything for our guys are we? Soderberg is coming off a great year and the Avs aren't up against a wall trying to move salary like we are, and all they could get was a 3rd? Gives us a rough idea what Frolik might be worth (ie less than Soderberg).

Pretty much sets up the ballpark for Frolik. Probably getting a conditional 3rd/4th based on 19-20 performance.

Cap space is now becoming the new way to get great deals with cheap deals. AZ is taking advantage of this.

Flames already tried to give away Frolik not sure why anyone expected anything of value. We are lucky if we don't have to pay.
