Edwards turns 59 in December and he's the youngest member of the Flames ownership group. Seaman's 95th birthday is next week; Libin is 87; Riddell is 82; Markin is 73; and McCaig is 66.

Really, that's all the motivation any of them need to sell off their share of the team.

Thats what Shannon said this morning too. They're old. No nefarious plot to sell the team I don't think.

Also mentioned that Edwards wants more input and to be closer to the franchise.

My only fear is he goes all Dundon on us.

Closer to the franchise - is he going to move back to Calgary or has he gotten proficient with Skype (a la Kevin Lowe) all the way from London?

Depends if the UCP is elected next spring and retroactively to January 1, 2019 restores the pre-NDP provincial tax rates.

Not that I have ever heard anything to the contrary, but is Seaman still an owner? He's not on the Flames ownership page

It looks like he hasn't been listed in the annual media guide as an owner since 2011-12, so he may have sold his stake years ago.

On the elite prospects website it has him part of the ownership group upto 2014-15. He was mentioned in some area stories back then so maybe over the last few years he has sold his stake.

Seaman left the ownership group after his brother passed away.

Interesting. Based on how things have been handled lately it’s looking like he was probably a voice of reason.

Edwards has been in charge since the mid nineties. Anyway, aside from the arena business, what decision has not been "reasonable"

I think that is a fairly long leap to make.

It's a whole bunch of decisions related to the arena.

On ice performance has also been very poor all things considered. If you compare the Flames to the rest of the league using any starting point after 1990, we are in the bottom 5 using nearly any metric.

Ownership has not been afraid to spend money to try to win. Individually, they are all pretty good members of the community. Collectively, Flames foundation is also great.

They are neither evil nor holy. They are just people, like the rest of us. Like the rest of us, they don't deserve any special handouts.

Since we're speaking about selling stakes of the team, I'd be totally fine with public money contributed in exchange for a corresponding stake in the team. Since there was just a willing seller, the other owners might not even have to give up anything compared to what they had before.

Posted this in the Olympics thread, but the Olympics bid does not include a new arena, but a Saddledome refurb. CSEC likely fuming right now

Quote:
The plan includes two new facilities in Calgary, a fieldhouse that would host figure skating and short track speed skating during the Games, and a new mid-size arena capable of seating 5,000 to 6,000 spectators.

The rest of the events would be hosted in refurbished venues dating from the '88 Olympics in Calgary, Canmore and Kananaskis and an upgraded McMahon Stadium.

Ski jumping and combined nordic events are planned for Whistler, while curling facilities are to be determined.

The draft plan calls for a revamp of the Saddledome rather than a new NHL-calibre arena, although there is a caveat saying a new arena could be incorporated into the plan.

So, put it at $6B with a new arena, maybe less. Weren't recent estimates for the Games at $6B anyways before today?

If you combine the cost of the 5000-6000 seat arena with the cost of the proposed Saddledome renovations, have CSEC kick in the rest and build a 18000 seat arena.

Problem solved.

Saddledome needs "upgrades" to host the games. This isn't a plan to replace the City's idea of a new event center in Victoria Park.

If this does go ahead, I hope the upgrades to the dome get started next off-season. While in the meantime CSEC and the City hash out a new arena

Revamping the Dome would be ridiculous. I would be 100% against a bid if it meant split-cities and half-assed venues. The coupon-clipping Olympics - yay!

Just think what $4.5B from the federal government could do for this town... oh wait, never mind.

Define upgrades though.

Widening the concourse.?
updated access to the Internet?
New Ice Plant?
More bathrooms.

Its not a simple matter of slapping some paint on the dome and its good, especially if its an Olympic venue. Unless we're content with the barn in Edmonton getting all the high end games and events and Calgary gets the secondary events, the Dome just isn't the building that an Olympic bid needs.
