My family and I did a road trip through the midwest last year and I thought Indianapolis, Madison and Milwaukee were pretty awesome cities. All the amenities of large metropolises without all the negative aspects (traffic, scary areas/crime). I used to travel to Columbus, OH alot 15 years ago and I thought that was a really nice city too.

I really like San Antonio. Lively city with great food and enough touristy stuff to do.
The River walk is awesome.

San Antonio. Best city in Texas hands down.

I agree with all of these. Although people in San Francisco get all bent out of shape if you call it that. But you redeemed yourself with the Johnny Cash reference!

I like DC, Boston and NYC for the big cities, probably mostly because I know them the best. I feel like you have to go to a big city a few times to find the real great spots. I've never really got San Fran, but maybe just haven't been enough. San Diego is great, but not for the city experience.
I'd pick a lot of smaller south east cities actually as my favorite weekend trips. Charleston, SC has so much going for it. Richmond, VA has so many great restaurants and breweries now.

As a place to visit NYC should be at the top of the list, but I would probably not enjoy living there long-term.
My under-rated choice is Tucson - smaller and more charming than Phoenix.
And Kona is a place where I could happily spend my winters.

I enjoyed San Francisco, but don't really have a desire to go again (the cold, foggy weather the entire time played a part).
Seattle and New York are both cities I could visit over and over again.

Minneapolis St. Paul is one of my favourite cities to visit. Lot's on interesting places to visit and watch baseball and football, plus all the lakes in the surrounding area that makes for great walleye fishing. Not to mention all the great courses.
Of course i'm a wee bit biased as my brother lives there

Top for me are Boston, Chicago, San Diego, then Miami.
I'd put New York in a class of it's own. Great place to visit.
I've heard Portland, Nashville, and Austin are great but I haven't been.
I had a work trip to Sarnia, ON once and stayed longer and went to Detroit to knock Red Wings and Tigers games off my list. I stayed downtown and it wasn't as bad as everyone said, but I also didn't wander around into the super sketchy areas. It's definitely a bizarre place.

Echoing the San Antonio part. Really liked San Antonio, but was only there for 1 night. New York is always a good trip, with so many different things to do.
Really want to visit Portland and Nashville.

None of these are really appealing as a place to live and i have been to all of them with the exception of San Antonio and Austin, i would have to go with Kona or Lahaina.
One item that would have to be a must for me is to be near the ocean in sub tropical or tropical climate. I could be persuaded on Charleston, SC but the climate there can be very harsh.

Everyone has their own criteria but IMO San Antonio and Austin would be great places to live.

Seattle is great, it has all the great things only big US cities have, but is filled with clean and polite people (though that documentary about Seattle becoming a bums paradise was a bit alarming).
Portland was kind of a letdown, it may make a better place to live than visit, it's got it's charm but we got bored there pretty quick. Kind of like Vancouver, minus the soul crushing cost of living.

DC, NOLA and Seattle are some of my favorite places to visit.
And I disagree with the OP, Houston is a great city.

Went to San Francisco last year and it was fantastic. Super friendly people and lots to do. Seattle and Portland are both a close second for me.
