Crazy stuff. I hope the kid swinging the stick doesn't play sanctioned hockey for the rest of high school at least.

an ugly day for kids sports for sure. sounded lie the victim is ok.

wonder if the kid who did the swinging had a history of being difficult, and what drove him to do this.

Can't see that being anything less than a lifetime suspension.

hope if the kid goes to university, he's looked up and banned form there, too.
I want him done with hockey. period.

One of the few times I'd say an on ice incident should be dealt with in a court of law. I'd charge him with assault.

How old are they? Not sure I'd agree to a lifetime ban if the young person can be reformed.

Well it was a high school game, so likely anywhere from 15-18.

reform him as a person, but not as a hockey player.

That’s ugly and horrible. Probably need more than a 2 second video clip before handing out the kids punishment but there is no justification for that.

Even when I saw "stick swinging" in the title I wasn't expecting that. One of the worst on-ice attacks I've ever seen.

It was an awful attack. No question.

He is a teenager though, and capable of redemption.

We don't suspend players for life for hits from behind, which can be potentially far more dangerous.

There's a different level of viciousness and malice involved with an attack like this one though. I agree with the lifetime ban and perhaps a solid round of anger management. That was just ugly.

What happened prior to the attack? Did we see somebody lose it over a collision (but still a "hockey play")? Or did something else happen off camera and/or behind the ref that brought it on?

Not saying it's right or justified, just that we need more than the final few seconds.

Some internet sleuthing, but from the game sheet, it looked like a chippy game. not at all condoning it, but based solely on the game sheet, I could see some hot headedness happening, especially amongst a bunch of teenage boys

Examples of the penalties doled out leading to that hit, which was in the second period. "Elbowing, Kneeing, Roughing, Tripping, Head Contact, Slashing".

In the moments immediately before the incident, it looks like he loses it because he tripped over his victim, who was already prone because of a collision with a third player:

From reddit, though on a video that is 50 pixels by 20:

As far as punishment goes, his high school hockey career should be over. That, in turn, is basically going to end any hopes of a scholarship, assuming he was good enough to earn one.

?????

What more needs to be seen? No matter what happened before the incident you can’t have a kid who flies off the handle like this playing hockey. The only way more video helps is to inform his reform/counselling services, not his punishment. Banning him is a given.

This makes it look much worse for the offending player. The player getting attacked didn't do a thing in that moment to deserve that.

Any ban is going to end it for him unless he can go find a job in the Federal League. Or the Quebec Senior Mens semi pro league.
