I could see the Oilers being a frontrunner. Maybe they move Draisatl for Karlsson?

He's the best Flames Dman with the puck on his stick. Without the puck, he's 3rd or 4th. Hard to consider a guy a #1, stud Dman when he isn't a guy you'd want to have on the ice protecting a lead with 2 minutes to play.

If they were to get Karlsson they would definitely take on Ryan cause he's the type of player-contract they would take

Why would Karlsson sign in Edmonton?

He wouldn't. That's what's funny. The cocky Oil trade for him thinking he'd want to join the ranks of their "legends", then he walks in the summer and they're left writhing in pain lugging Bobby Ryan's contract around til 2022.

Honestly I just don't see him moving until summer at the earliest when the other team can extend him

Totally agree. So messed up. Oilers will miss playoffs, but in order to salvage anything in next few years should still outbid anyone for Karlsson and out-pay anyone to resign him.

But alas, what good would a 10 team no trade list be if it didn't have deadmonton on it.

If the Oilers were going to make a play for him, I don’t see it happening at the deadline. The smarter play for Ott is to wait for the draft.

The Senators would get a heck a lot more at the deadline for Karlsson when teams are looking for that extra playoff push, versus the deadline where everyone knows the Sens are backed in a corner with a looming UFA.

Yes for the Oilers it would certainly make more sense to do something at the draft, but Chia will likely do some odd Chia thing and end up giving up what becomes first overall and Dahlin, next year's first rounder and Draisatl for Karlsson and get Bobby Ryan's contract with it.

Bob McKenzie @TSNBobMcKenzie
OK, bit of an Erik Karlsson trade talk update thread, such as it is: OTT’s very strong preference is that a team potentially acquiring EK would also have to take Bobby Ryan, who has four years remaining with a $7.25M cap hit but actual salary of $7.5M...

It goes without saying, but I’ll say it anyway, that further complicates already complicated situation, especially as it relates to doing a deal by Monday’s 3 pm ET deadline. The Ryan Factor would either take out a team like TB or require getting a 3rd team involved. Not easy.

Bob McKenzie @TSNBobMcKenzie
My sense is that OTT trade talks with more than one team are progressing from conceptual/theoretical to actually talking about some of the specific pieces that could be included were a deal to be done. And, of course, there’s the Bobby Ryan factor.

As I’ve said from the outset, I still think it’s less likely than more likely that EK is traded by Monday’s deadline but, at this point anyway, the door is by no means entirely closed on trading him by Monday. GM Pierre Dorion and his staff are fully engaged in the process.

The forecast of what’s most likely to happen in the relative short term, IMO, would rank as follows: 1. Karlsson not traded now, but more likely in the summer. 2. Karlsson traded by Monday with Bobby Ryan in the deal. 3. Karlsson traded by Monday but no Bobby Ryan in deal.

Lol this clearly has Melnyk balls deep in this trade.

Tampa it is then? How many teams can absorb Ryan too anyway?

Some cynics might suggest this is all a lot of talk about something that is less likely than more likely to happen. Fair enough, as long as you conveniently ignore the following:

1. Karlsson is arguably NHL’s top defenceman and top five, if not top three, players in the game. 2. The Senators are actively/seriously engaged in talks to trade him. 3. Even if it doesn’t happen by Monday, it may very well occur in the off-season. In any case, unique situation.

There are at least two, if not three gross images in this post.

If Ottawa is insistent on moving Ryan together with Karlsson, that greatly limits the number of teams that can even consider bidding on him.

Which teams could afford to take on both contracts? Arizona and Vegas?

If you buy out Ryan, then you are essentially paying Karlsson $14 million per season.

Lol- Karlsson is great but if Stevie Y is willing to trade Brayden Point then let's get our asses in to this foray immediately lol. How much would we have to add to Brodie to make that happen
