Its a comprehensive look at carriers from their early development in about 1902 right through to the Gulf War. It covers all of the nations that develops carriers, the advancements, the battles and the tactics.

If I had one complaint, its an old person complaint that the text is tiny. But an excellent look right from CV-1 Langley to the mega carriers in the US inventory.
Thanks for the recommendation. $65 on the kindle store but I'll check out some libraries and whatnot, interested in checking it out

I think I got it for 3 bucks, I also picked up two books on the history of Canada's blue water navy that will be my Christmas readings.

Its amazing that the best place to find books on history are at garage sales and used book stores.

CVN-80 The next generation

The proud name Enterprise will take to the seas again in 10 years. The new Enterprise a Gerald R Ford Class Aircraft carrier which is expected to be the third ship of the class which is expected to replace the Nimitz Class Carrier. It will be the third ship of a class of 5 ships joining the Gerald Ford and John F Kennedy.

The Gerald R Ford Class Carrier is a generational leap forward in aircraft carrier design and construction. Designed to carry more then 80 5th generation F-35C fighters and a possible compliment of next generation autonomous drones, this class of carrier will also possibly deploy next generation high energy weapons as part of its air defense strategy.

The Enterpise's Keel is expected to be laid down at the Newport News Ship Building facility In an effort to save costs the construction has been slowed down its original delivery date of 2025 has been extended to 2028. As mentioned before the steel is expected to come from the CVN-69. The first cut of steel ceremony was held in August 2017

the Gerald R Ford class of carrier is a 100,000 ton monster with a deck length of over 1000 feet and a beam of 256 feet on the deck measurement. It uses two nuclear reactors and has a speed of up to 30 knots, while having a unlimited range before having to overhaul the reactors in 25 years.

Because of the automation and design of the ship it has a smaller crew compliment then the Nimitz class employing 4200 officers and men.

Some of the advances on this ship are

  • Improved arresting gear to be able to service lighter drones
  • Computerized control and automation systems
  • advanced Rim-162 Sea Sparrow missiles
  • Advanced radar
  • the replacement of the Steam Catapult system with an electromagnetic rail system which will improve performance while reducing system costs and maintenance
  • A reduced radar cross section
Visibility this class of carriers has moved its superstructure back to allow the carrier to use 4 catapults. While the Nimitz class had 4 catapults, the position of its superstructure made it impossible to use at least one of its catapults with larger classes of planes. The Gerald Ford Class because of these design changes will be able to average 160 sorties a day with a surge capability of up to 270 sorties per day.

The Gerald R Ford class is expected to have a 50 year service life taking it to about 2078, because of that it is upgrade available. Its expected to be able to adopt free electron laser point systems as a counter to hyper sonic cruise missiles. Its also expected that its mid life overhaul will include the addition of dynamic armor which uses a electric field to disrupt attacking missiles. In order to be more ocean friendly it will also be eventually outfitted with a plasma arc waste destruction system which will reduce all wastes to gas.

Because of the reduction in the size of the crew its expected that crew berthing areas will be more comfortable and quieter for the crew the ship will also include a full 41 bed hospital..

Thanks for reading, if there's a topic that you want to dive into or suggest, let me know.

So piece of Trivia.

At the Battle of Midway the United States had 3 fast carriers and one of them was the hastily repaired Yorkton. The American's did lose a carrier at Midway and had two fast carriers to cover the Pacific Ocean.

By the end of the Marianas Campaign the American's had 35 carriers including 11 Fast carriers and a combination of light and escort carriers.
