I always thought Ortio had it in him. Was put into a weird situation and IMO, never really got much of a shot.

Not really a prospect, but would have like to see Joe Colborne find his game here. Played a lot with him growing up and know his family pretty well. It would have meant a lot to him and them to carve out a career here I think.

I agree with Ortio. I thought he was going to be good or at least good enough to be a solid backup who could play a lot if injuries occurred to the starter.

There honestly weren't a lot of prospects around that time to feel excited about. Maybe Saprykin?
You are bang on and can’t believe I was the first ‘like’ on this. Most posters here must be uber young because back in early 2000’s during the dark ages when the Flames were really really bad, Chuck Kobasew was a guy I was really rooting for and hoping he would be the saving grace. I’ll never forget his awesome preseason games only to pretty much disappear when the season started.

Another guy around the same time period was Jordan Leopold. So while I also like Leopold, I vote:

Chuck Kobasew!

The other Tkaczuk (it sounds the same) a decently sized first round pick with good hands and a decent physical game. He was touted as future captain material. He got everyone excited in his first pro year in Saint John's he scored 25 goals and 66 points, he got a look see in his second year putting up 11 points in and 4 goals in 19 games. He got derailed by a couple of concussions and some other injuries and ended up bouncing around Europe. But I had a lot of hopes for the other first round 6th overall Tkahockey player.

Does Sasha Lokovic count?
Only because he defended a coach in Edmonton, and other weird stuff (I recall something about running the stadium stairs naked?)

I'll always remember Kobasew for 2004, although if I recall correctly he was the only flames forward to not score a goal those playoffs.

I have to say Hull as well. He was actually scoring as a rookie along with Fleury. All I hear was how lousy a skater he was and heard something about his laziness - WTF? Guess history showed something different.

I also had a soft spot for Hnat Domenichelli. Great in the juniors, flashes with the Flames, but never panned out.

And, how can you not have a soft spot for the one and only FATA!

Daniel Tkaczuk is definitely one that I had a soft spot for. I get irritated when someone calls him a bust actually. Concussion put a stop to his NHL career, one that I thought would see him as the future captain of the Flames. I still think it was a very solid pick.

He still has another year so he's not an ex-prospect yet.

Mickey Renaud, he had all the makings of an impact player. Gone way too soon.

All of those guys are now retired except for John Armstrong (playing in Denmark), Markko Jantunen (playing in Div II Finland) and Andrei Taratukhin (playing in Romania!)
