I should have stuck with my initial pessism. Jays were a useful idiot in negotiation for a player that was always going to the Dodgers.
At least we helped pump him up to $70mil a year with our stupid involvement.

$700M is crazy. I don't know how it was possible that he'd have topped the highest projections by that much, but it happened. And of course that Dodger report was total bull#### to get followers.

Be interesting to see the response from the Jays and the franchise friendly media..how quickly the respond and how they frame it.
Can or do they say they couldn't afford it, if that was the reason?
How close were they? Not that it matters.
This was a one on a generation chance to land someone as maybe the most talented player in a long long time, not just another good player, and good for Rogers being involved at a deeper level
..but please hope the Jays don't go down the path to insult fans of pushing hard on the "goes to show the commitment of Rogers to the team". It's not that simple in this case.
Though, partially true, it doesn't mean that the $500+m they were going to spend on Ohtani is going to get spent on 2,3,4, or 5 other peices instead.
They need one or two more bats, someone to get Vlad engaged, and a 3rd baseman. Missed out on Soto, but outside of Bellinger, there's a lot of meh bats, where brining back Hernandez or Gurriel is not the worst option (but a boring one).

The Jays apparently had a “unicorn” budget and a non unicorn budget so, you are right, the Jays aren’t going to spend that Ohtani money on other players. I do think they’ll push hard for Bellinger though.

It's not. I think this was a one time deal that Rogers was offering to just Ohtani based on the unique projections his marketing brings. They'll likely have to reevaluate their proposition as I'm sure fans are pissed. They'll likely have to bump up their spending by $30M or so to ensure they bring in some quality through a trade.

So where do the Jays go from here? No Ohtani. No Soto. That’s bad.

Yeah... the team ought to just change their name to the Toronto Stalking Horses.
This is a gut punch today that I can only placate a bit with tge knowledge that future fans will roll their eyes and marvel that the Dodgers are still paying shohei Ohtani potwntially years after my death.

Let's be real, this is all Drake's fault. Once he rocked the Ohtani jersey his curse guaranteed he'd never be a Jay.

I maintain they gotta evaluate immediately who should be kept for long term and who should be traded, between Bo and Vlad. Bo will bring the greatest return but is also a legit player to build around. Vlad regressed, could bring a lot, but also a guy who would be willing to stay in Toronto for years. I have no preconceived notions as to which one of the two or both if they should trade for depth, but I think they have to deal one or both. Too many open spots to fill, and the FAs out there who are at the top of the heap, are overrated and will cost too much. If Bo doesn't want to sign an extension, deal him. If Vlad brings back a good return, explore it.

Pretty crazy contract. The deferrals will give the Dodgers a big window to win over the next few years but will be pretty painful on the back end.

We were dark horses to get Soto and Ohtani so we can’t be completely stunned to lose both. It’s a brutal kick to the gut.
Morosi may never be allowed in Toronto again.
Vlad needs to become Vlad again. Manoah seems to be working hard to get back on track. Kirk needs to bring a professional approach to his off season.
If we can get our best players to take another step, we’ll be better than we were last year. Even with the holes that need to be filled, we are still a team with some really good young players and a strong starting rotation and bullpen.

I wonder how NHL players feel when they see Baseball, Football and NBA players get all this big money they don’t get
