Cant see Huckins getting a contract. Who knows though. Could be wrong, not much in the pipeline.

May 8th:

Seattle puts away the Blazers, 4-2, after a 4-2 win. They will now play the powerhouse Winnipeg Ice in the finals, who have the same 12-2 record in the playoffs. Ciona had 1a, and was +1. 14gp/5g/2a/7pts,+4, 10 PIM.

Finally coming around to this realization? This was the one criteria that made me believe Treliving needed to be sacked. He ran the prospect base into the toilet and there is going to be a hard reckoning happen when the 2021 and 2022 draft classes turn into pumpkins and we only see one or two players come out of the collective years. Creates a big gap in the system and one that is not going to be resolved any time soon. With only five picks in the 2023 draft and possibly the same in 2024 and 2025, the prospect base is going to continue to slide. The system is in a shambles with no hopes of drafting our way out it. Flames may become a team that is forced to live off the waiver wire to build some depth. A hard lesson in asset management to learned.

They should add a couple of good prospects this summer.
They should as long as they don't try and prove they're the smartest guys at the draft. Hoping they come away with a couple guys that can play sooner than later. Bad time to be thinking about projects.

My view has been consistent, you just don't really read what people write.

I've stated that the lack of picks has been the primary problem. They've done well with the picks they've had. 2021 may prove to be an exception to that, but for the most part they've done well with pick efficiency. They've not had enough picks.

Why?
Because they are under a mandate to compete now.

All rolls back to that.

The whole smartest guy in the room thing is tiresome and a rather empty criticism. I don't think this current scouting group has a habit of going way off board. You can find exceptions (Boltmann) but do you want them to just grab the latest copy of THN's draft preview and pick from that?

I wouldn't prioritize picking guys who can play sooner. Pick the guys with the highest long-term upside. Draft for skill and talent. Home run swings every time.

Sure it's consistent. Keep repeating that. You say one thing, but then fully support the guy in charge. Mix messages there Jiri.

Bull. It's because Treliving wasn't good at his job. He was a wonderful communicator and very personable guy who exuded confidence, but he had no plan and didn't manage assets worth a damn. That is the most important part of a GM's job, keep the system stocked and healthy. Treliving bled picks and then never drafted guys with potential to play in the NHL. That's on him and no one else. Carolina certainly managed to be competitive AND continue to stockpile picks. What was Treliving's excuse again? Oh right, he was trying to compete rather than manage the team effectively.

Yes, because that has been working so well of late. We haven't generated a consequential player since Tkachuk was drafted. We're likely to see the majority of the home run swings from 2021 end up in strikeouts as the players don't earn contracts out of junior. When you're down six runs you don't go to the plate trying to hit home runs. You go up there and try and get men on base and generate some momentum. Flames really need to start making these picks count and turn them into at least professionals and then guys that can contribute on an NHL roster.

There was an amusing article way back, I can't remember if it was Burke or which GM. But essentially they compared that GMs drafting record against a potato (ie the Potato just drafted off of NHLe) and the Potato won handily.

There are tools out there that can help teams pick late round gems.

Treliving and GMs like him and their drafting teams just seem to ignore them. Their drafting is ####ing horrible.

Again the draft record doesn’t support the conclusion that they are horrible, only that they haven’t had enough picks
Late round gems like Dustin Wolf?

Fully agree with this point. The problem hasn’t been poor evaluation, but rather overall philosophy. This year is a good example. The Flames will likely have a chance to draft a nice player at 16, but other teams are also allowed to make selections. Most playoff teams will have more than 5 picks in the draft, so they will an even greater ability to add to the cupboards.

If there was any level of true playoff success over the past 5-7 years to suggest the team has, or has possessed, the pieces to challenge the top teams in the post season then I would understand the direction the Flames have pursued. Unfortunately, the results don’t justify the philosophy.

I don’t think this type of thinking makes us “tank” guys. I simply feel the good teams place far more emphasis on draft and develop than the Flames do. In the short term adding competent, seasoned, players may get a team a few extra points, but it’s like deficit spending as the balance remains to be dealt with by somebody else at some other time. Hopefully such sentiments are being expressed by candidates in the interview process.
