Default Xcode 4 Officially Released

I've been waiting a while for this one. This is one area where I really wish they'd try to follow Microsoft's lead (Visual Studio), and it looks like they're starting to do that.

As noted by MacStories, Apple has seeded the golden master version of Xcode 4 to both iOS and Mac OS X developers. The "golden master" designation indicates that this version of the software is intended to be the final version released to the public, barring any last-minute issues.

Xcode 4, which first debuted for developers at WWDC last June, offers a significant update to Apple's development environment for Mac OS X and iOS applications. Most visibly, Xcode 4 features a new single-window interface, but a number of other enhancements are also included.

I've been testing the new Xcode 4 off and on for a few months. It's freaking nice. I hated the floating windows of the older versions (hate it in Photoshop as well).

Visual Studio is pretty much the only product Microsoft has done a good job with over the years - not a bad thing to emulate in my books.

Officially released today!

Free for developers, $4.99 for everyone else.
In contrast, Visual Studio is $549.99 for developers and free for everyone else.

I think this is a really weird (and stupid) thing for apple to do. $5 is clearly not enough to make a profit (like VS), all it does is discourage tinkerers (who may progress to development).

Yeah, I'm not sure what the thinking is behind this.

Edit: Actually, I think the basic (free) developer account is all you need in order to download Xcode4. Maybe the $4.99 App Store one is for people who don't want to register a free account?

Having said that, of course, I'll still be shelling out my $5 when I get home tonight, haha.

I'm a little sad about Xcode 4. No Code Pilot support until maybe the end of the month, and I'm so confused about the complete overhaul of the UX. Change is going to take some time to sort out.

I want to kill XCode 4 right now.. None of the autocompletion or syntax highlighting is working properly and I can't figure out how to fix it.

Until I get some answers on that, I'm going back to XCode 3.
