Default NHL National Viewership Down 22% in the U.S.

https://twitter.com/user/status/1620596541739372544

I was a little bit surprised to see this. Reading a bit more into it, it sounds like it is partly the result of networks not promoting it hard and archaic blackout policies.

Probably a result of the situation room’s unsolicited call in to reverse the Coleman goal. Too blatant

Wait, NATIONAL viewership in the US is 373k - 478k per game?! That's like a rounding error in US population, like there could be that many TV's just accidentally left on the channel when an NHL game comes on. Wow, I had no idea NHL was that abysmal down there.

Just to clarify as I'm reading that quickly. Is this nationally televised games draw these numbers or is that all regional and national games averaged out?

Heh ... Maybe they hate the overlayed digital boards as much as I do. Players, refs, sticks all dissapear often. Even worse, any puck off the ice enough to be in front of the boards just vanishes.

It is God Awful!!!!

If these are national broadcasts, there shouldn't be any blackouts.

Oh man, digital board ads have been the most jarring, annoying thing to happen to NHL broadcasts in years. SO brutal in a world where everyone has 4k TV's, looking to get the best picture possible.

In 2023 on a 4K TV I shouldn't be reminded of NHL 2001 on PS2 with players eyes or parts of their jerseys suddenly turning full flickering white, due to glitches, while watching an actual NHL game. That's just embarrassing.

Yeah, that's why I asked for clarification. Blackouts should only be regional.

People are fed up with poor officiating and game management.

I would highly doubt that would factor into US viewership overall. If so, the NBA would get 5 viewers a week.

Not to mention what we see in the NFL every weekend

It's easier just to stream games, those numbers won't be counted obviously.

I’d guess the tankathon plays a role.

It’s not just Arizona anymore. There are some big market teams attempting to be historically bad.

Are the gambling commercials as egregious as here in Canada?

The digital board ads sure make watching the game worse, aminated/moving graphics behind the play is just incredibly distracting, the glitches are another story. The people who come up with these ideas are just shameless.

Yes they are.

Other than ESPN+, which is affected by blackouts, it’s quite difficult to gain access to games.

This is especially true for playoffs. SlingTV is horrible, DirectTV is expensive, Comcast sucks.

You really have to make an effort to watch NHL games. I, a millennial, had to buy good old fashioned cable to make sure that I actually get the playoffs this year. It’s a travesty.

Weren't they testing digital video boards during the last World Cup of Hockey? (A century ago)

I'm surprised they haven't gone with that yet. I figure we would still see on ice ads, but the digital ones would be viewable to both TV and in-arena audiences.

This cannot be right can it?? ESPN/ TNT are nationally broadcast games, yet capturing 1% of their audience. There is no way the numbers can be that low.

I'm not surprised, cable is soon to be a thing of the past, scheduling sucks donkey balls and in a world where everyone has a 4k TV every game should be broadcast higher than 720p. The NBA is rolling out 4k and every NFL playoff game is in 4k yet the NHL uses 1990's cameras

The league should mandate a move of McDavid to a major US market instead of languishing in Edmonton haha.

In all seriousness though it probably wouldn't hurt to have the most electric talent shown off on a bigger stage. I dislike the Oilers as much as anyone, but for future TV contracts and league revenue wouldn't that be for the best?
