Would love to see the number of total shots taken and posts as a percentage of total shots taken.

McDavid has a high number of posts because he is always on the ice.

The annoying part is the amount of posts and crossbars they hit that ring off the inside but don't go in! Can't measure puck luck but it doesn't feel like it's there this year yet.

I don't think anyone is suggesting this is the reason the Flames aren't in first in the Pacific.

So that crowd can relax a bit.

But man the number of people that hate the idea that some bad fortune may have played a role to some degree are just hilarious to me.

A post is as close as you can get to beating a goaltender and not getting a goal. Having many of those doesn't qualify you for anything but it does suggest you were often a whisker from an extra goal.

It's almost like a high danger missed shot statistic.

It would cool if the league quantified how many goals were iron and in, to compare it to iron and out.

The strangest part in posts is that it doesn't count as a shot on goal.

But why would it? Goalie doesn't have to make a save.

I'm glad they started counting shots from the other zone (dump outs) as a shot (sort of off topic). Truer to the rule.

It's still a shot on net that beat the goalie but hit something.

Would the goalie be required to keep the puck out of the net if it hit the post?

If not ... how can it be shot and not a goal? That would increase his save percentage.

Makes sense.

Probably why the nhl doesn't track it if they did they could adjust the save %.

We have lost games by hitting so many posts.

Hit crossbars are much more significant than posts, so it would be interesting to look at them separately. Many times when a post is hit, it is because the goaltender is hugging the post but doesn’t actually have to cover it. A hit crossbar is almost always a shot that beat the goaltender. A goaltender wouldn’t intentionally let a shot go by with the assumption that it would hit the crossbar, and you can’t exactly hug the crossbar knowing that there’s no chance that a puck can squeeze through.

Good thought.

I'll split them out next time (didn't save it)

I think it's fair especially in the first quarter of the season. If the Flames don't finish strong blown leads will definitely be the story of the season, and missing a key bounce or two is usually key in blowing a lead.

Well a couple ok bounces today and no blown lead, in spite of their best efforts pretty much proves the point that 10-15 cross bars over the league average can make a difference.

Yes, they would, but it's on the player to get it an inch lower or over, otherwise he missed, that's part of the skill of scoring goals...getting it in the net.

A player that hit the post missed by an inch and the player that missed the post by half an inch missed by 1.5 inches. And players miss the post by a little bit even more frequently than post shots.

Francis said during one of the intermissions today that the stats guys told him that the Flames are indeed #1 in the league in shots of the posts/crossbar.

Well by that logic they should also be scoring more than other teams. Not sure it works that way.
