Calgary should be jumping in there. We should be actively recruiting disillusioned HKers to come here. Most can just retire or semi-retire after they sell their $1.2millionUS condos.

I gave up on HK long ago. The last time i went back there it was infested with mainlander tourists. Was such a terrible experience i doubt i will ever go back.

Seems to be the take of many of people along China's new "silk road" project. Locals are being pushed out because they cannot afford house prices because of mainlanders buying up property and they say they behave badly.

Having people come to retire here is never a good idea. You get a small boost from the capital they bring, but then are left on the hook for the support of them and their property through their retirement.

The best immigrants are those that come to work or set up businesses. I'm not saying that we shouldn't be actively encouraging migrants from HK to come to Canada, but ones that want to work.

Both the nonviolent police and the nonviolent protesters are being let down and set up by the government with Beijing pulling the strings.
Right, but there is a huge different in response from the police forces vs. the protesters here. They are not accepting criticism, acting as if they are above reproach, and there have been no acknowledgement of the increasing use of strong arm and intimidation tactics on the part of the HK/Mainland police.

Just today, police started firing tear gas rounds indiscriminately into residential areas where there were no protesters even present, this is being widely covered by local news.

While I am sure there are certainly rank and file HK police officers who are against violence and intimidation tactics, where are they? Their silence in speaking out against use of such intimidation tactics is complicity. This is after nurses, lawyers, educators, all have come out against this type of behaviour on the part of the police forces.

This is the kind of language that makes me think that westerners are inherently racist towards Chinese people and just try their best to hide it. Infested? Are you serious? All that type of language does is propagate the dehumanization of Chinese people and paint them with the whole locusts/yellow peril stigmatizing stereotype. Do you really think that every single of Chinese people that were vacationing in Hong Kong is in some way inferior to yourself? Would you ever call a large group of western tourists an infestation? Language matters and it’s very revealing of people’s inherent biases...

It's tabloid like headlines sure, but it's not putting anything not being covered by a lot of other HKFP, SCMP or the guardian. There are lots of other reports of the same thing.
They are also the second largest distributed newspaper in HK, which means they do have a significant readership.

The Chinese of mainland China are a different race than the Chinese in HK or the Chinese in Taiwan?

This was around 5 years ago and yes a lot of them were "inferior". You can't really blame them. They were mostly stuck in communist China for decades and never got to see the outside world.
I'm sure they are better now that they are travelling more. They better be. I know a few hotel managers in Richmond/Vancouver and when they first starting getting Mainland Chinese tourists, they would take everything from the hotel room. Pillow cases, desk lamps, coathangers, hair dryers, and yes even shower curtains. It was like a pack of "locusts" went by....

Anyways back to my last experience there. 40 year old grown men knocked my 6 year old over running to the line for the Toy Story ride. Saw 3 fights started at Ocean Park for i think budging in line.. where 2 of them had to get security to escort them out. Waiting in line at Disney some little kid needed to pee so his mom pulls down his pants and he starts pissing into bushes while we were waiting in line.

I mean some HK people are rude too. This 80 year old hk lady poked me in the calf a few times with her umbrella because i was walking to slow. Prob deserved it as i was carrying a huge backpack and it was +35c.

Westerners? Most HK people hate mainlanders. My wife included. Not that I think it’s right. But I can also attest to seeing swarms of mainlanders akin to the “locusts” theme. They will bowl you right over just to budge you in line. It’s actually quite a culture shock when I first saw it. This obviously doesnt make them lesser people, but there’s definitely a different mentality with the majority of mainland Chinese when it comes to personal space or the things we consider common courtesy in western culture.

Wasn't this in some part due to the reverence and emulation of Mao and his anti-elite / anti-scholar sentiments?

Okanagonians in the Okanagan are bad enough, to be honest.

HK people have held a lot of biases against mainlanders, and many still do. It can definitely be nasty and unfair. The same is also true of many people from Guangdong in how they have viewed Chinese from the interior who have moved south, referring to them as barbarians. There's no shortage of hostile discrimination going around. In Shanghai I joke with my wife, in a tongue in cheek way, about countryside people in Shanghai, because there is truth to it. People have learned different habits and some people are pretty much stepping off of farms into cosmopolitan environments with all kinds of expectations they've never encountered before. Some people are just self-centered jackasses who behave as though they've just stepped off a farm even though they ought to know better. It's a part of the world that has experienced centuries-worth of growth in a few decades, so of course there are some pretty different ideas about what's appropriate.

I would say though, that there is a much greater appetite for learning cultural knowledge from around the world in China than you would find in most places. Chinese people frequently place a very high value on cultural learning and are willing to adapt as they learn the 'right' way to do things in different places, then often bringing that learning into practice in their own lives in China. People in China are often hungry for advancement and learning to be sophisticated. There's just a lot of variation in where people are at on this journey.
